First off, the reasons i skipped out on watching the show years back when it came out. (oh and sorry if i dont really say anything useful, lmao, my bad. You guys know by now how i am at writing though.) The CG, the planes, and the fact that i didnt know about Lavie and hadnt seen how totally omega adorable she is (lol Himeko is so fun to quote). Anyway ill go into it more in a minute. Oh and sorry for the lack of pics, i watched on dvd so i cant do much about that, so i picked 3 of my favorite pics i have on the computer instead. <more> 1. The CG is horrible. Every scene people are around anything (just about everything in this show is done with CG other then the fucking characters) it looks like someone photoshopped the characters in really poorly or made a shitty amv and tried mixing two scenes together that DONT belong. You get used to it, yeah, but definately not 'right away' thats for sure. 2. The planes are by far some of the gayest planes ive ever seen. They are even shaped like dildo's for fucks sake. I figure they are modeled after the types of cars that the mixed-type of world they live in time would have had in real life (other then the obviously old musket soldiers, but around the 60's-late 70's there were cars that looked almost exactly like vanships just with back tires and doors, and a normal engine. Yeah, thats fine and all but, atleast give them some wings so its partially belieavable. As my brother puts it 'i can deal with the airships, but wtf is up with the planes', this coming from a pilot, lol. Seriously though, the planes make no sense at all, and while airships dont either, airships are like mecha - they are just believed to work how they are meant to without further questioning. But the little planes could atleast have some fucking wings. 3. I never saw Lavie pics much. If i had, i woudlnt have skipped this show, cuz god she is Love. Anyway, into uh, other stuff. The actual review i guess, lol. First off, the animation, once you get used to teh shitty CG, and the characters (which arnt CG) are really nice. The art is uh...i think based on art by Range Murata, but i really dont know. I mean, i know he did a lot of the official art ABOUT it, like characters and artbooks, but as far as i know i dont recall seeing the name come up during credits, or for any anime-style image credits. If im wrong, oh well, point is the characters are REALLY nice art-wise, and yeah everything else too. I didnt like how the clouds were done though...then again im probably just spoiled by Makoto Shinkai's skies and clouds. ----- The music, i liked it all, cept one song. The opening really sucked, like wow it was fucking terrible. The rest of the music was great and i really liked the song during the memories of Lavie and Claus' past near the end of whatever episode that was, it was baiscally an extended version of the full version of the ending song, lol. But really, all the BGM and the insert songs were good, not the BEST ive heard, but not bad by any means. ----- Characters! The only part that i actually talk about, and usually just repeat myself! Oh well. This is always the longest, so prepare yourselves, lmao. Anyway, other than the first two girls, they are in no order, but Lavie is by far my favorite in the show and one of my favorite animu girls in general, so she had to go first, lol. Posted Image 1. Lavie Head - her name is amusing. I wonder what her middle name is, "Given" maybe? Lav Givin Head, no surprise there you little cutie, but only if its for Claus right? what a lucky piece of fag pie he is. Anyway, she is probably the ONLY girl - real life, anime, manga, anything else - that could ever pull off "FUCKING ADORABLE" with that perfect example of a fucking bowl-cut, i mean seriously. I dont think anyone else could manage to make that so damn cute, its a fucking bowl cut and you coudlnt find a better example of one anywhere else, yet its so cute on her. Anyway, not only is her hair amazingly cute and her entire lookz, which btw are perfect. Short hair ( Most important thing) ), small chest ( second most important thing! ), cute tum tumz, adorable face, etc. Her personality (More important then the most important, but it only happens when both the important things happen anyway, so its a given.) is also great, shes my favorite type in more then just looks, this is one area she also covers very well. She's the cute, fun, happy, crazy, omgomgomg, tomboyish side included, type of girl that i just get all love-love about. Shes totally perfect! Anyway, shes also really good at her job, and god shes cute when shes in her overalls with the top off, but she looks totally like a loli in the sailor uniform during the uh...birthday for Guild fag episode, so its wonderful too...actually i think all her outfits were too damn kewt. Oh, she was also voiced by the same english VA that did one of my top favorite girls, Arisa Glennorth in Stellvia, not to mention a lot of very big roles in other shows (Pacifica Casull in ScraPrin, Haruka in FLCL, Tsuruya/Kyon-imouto in Haruhi, etc.) 1.5 - Silvanis' Sonar Girl - Yup. If you were wondering who my favorite 'side character' would be (I doubt you were, but my favorite character in anime are usually side ones or friend characters, so its expected id find one here too.) then here she is! Yeah, they say her name once, i dont remember what it was. But geeze, this girl is totally fucking kewt, plus shes amazing at her job, she even heard the "Exile" over the mechanics singing happy birthday and lots of other random noises including two ships and everything going on within them. And shes the entire 'sonar team' while teh otehr ships usually have about 3-5 people working on Sonar and doing a shitty job. Best part about this girl, she looks literally like an older Lavie, which means i was totally love-love once i saw her the first time, lmao. Spoilers 2. Russian Girl - As in, the Dissith girl who ends up hookin up with Mullin Shetland in the end and who isnt even introduced until the very latter half of the show. She's realllllly cute, and really fun and nice too, although she loves eating "bird", yeah, just plain ol bird, a little too much. Seriously though, at the end she was the cutest thing ever...well, other then Lavie of course. End Spoilerz 3. Alvis- ...I guess i lied, shes probably third place in this order as well, but after this they will be probably random. Anyway, shes an adorable loli thats real close with Lavie, Clause, and actually eventually EVERYONE aboard the Silvanis due to her loli-nature of curiousity and friendliness. Anyway, she is the key to "Exile" but other then that she's TIRE HEAD LOLI! or maybe landing-ready-loli, meh. Seriously, why the fuck does she have tires on her head? I dont know! But, i do know they are amazingly cute and i love them, i wish more loli had tires, then they could land easier on rough runways, plus its just wow cute. Other than that, almost all her scenes in teh anime are just for cuteness factor, like seriously, shes always being amazingly adorable in the background or taking 5 minutes to figure out how to make Lavie's old stuffed-animal sheep make its noise and doing it in Ichigo Mashimaro style of "Cute girls doing cute things." 4. Vincent Athari - He's voice in the dub by David Lucas under another one of his aliases (i believe his real name is the Steve Blum one and not Lucas, or so ive heard, but fuck it, David Lucas sounds way cooler.) who is known for...well, a shitload of roles. He is my favorite english voice actor, and thats saying a lot coming from someone who typically hates dubs, if you dont know him he is most well known as Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. But he's done an extremely vast number of other characters in big shows as both leads and side characters as well. Anyway, this isnt about him. But, for future reference, any person who he voices is automatically given extra badass points. Not that Vincent needs any extra. In the end of the show when they are being attacked by "Exile", the bridge of his ship (he's the captain or whatever.) gets literally TORN THE FUCK OFF, and these fuckers STILL just stand there shouting orders and shooting torpedo's, and after that they just hang out and wait till its over seeing as how they cant move their ship anymore. Yeah, thats pretty fucking badass if you ask me. Spoilers 5. Mullin Shetland - He seemed interesting right from the first time he's introduced...what, the first episode? He was the only musket soldier that had a 'main character/atleast-side-character' look to him, so it seemed weird when he aws just gone for awhile after that cuz he seemed like he belonged in teh show after all the attention he got. And then he shows up later, lol. He's pretty badass too, hell, in the end Khal and I both thought he was fucking dead, so did the Russky, but no, he managed to survive somehow. His character seemed to somehow build up a lot with little to no actual character development occuring for him. Just the times he was in the show showed his growth as a character, so it was pretty interesting seeing a character go from being a new character with like one side to becoming more then just a 'character' (which i talk about a lot in my shitty little reviews of shows or episodes, cuz its a very important factor.) with little to no actual shoved-in-your-face character development. Plus he gets ubar kewt russian wifey. End Spoiluz 6. Tatiana Wisla - Cute, but a bitch. If she was moar like Lavie personality wise shed be a lot better, still not any competition for Lavie, but a lot better then her normal bitch self. 7. Dio Eracles and Lucciola - Total Fags. Oh and if you ask me, Dio is based on the South Park version of Michael Jackson. Seriously, if you dont understand, find the Michael Jackson episodes of SP on youtube or something, then watch the dub of a scene with Dio being gay and you'll understand right away, and it will make you laugh every time you see him. 8. The rest, yeah, the MOST MAIN character i threw in with 'the rest'. I really thought the entire cast was pretty good, there were a few stupid characters thrown in or weird ones, or ones i didnt like at all, or ones i thought were developed poorly. All of them go here, cuz im too lazy and dont wanna make this review somehow LONGER. But really, even the faggotiest of the characters (number 7 up there.) were interesting and overall well made. This also includes all the cool ones i didnt mention like Alex and vice-captain girl and Clause who i dont have problems with really, and everyone else. Posted Image ----- Anyway, the show as a whole (yeah i didnt really go into it much, oh well) was pretty good. I tend to say 'this is definately one of my favorites' but i wont this time, cuz its not true. I liked the show and all, and it was actually pretty damn good, but the only reason im thinking its so good right now is cuz i just finished it and moreso due to Lavie. Im pretty biased based on things like 'is there a girl i really like?' and 'how much screentime does she get and how is her character treated throughout the show.' (as in her personality traits given and how well they are portrayed i guess.) but that wont make me say a show is one of my favorites. But, i definately do recommend atleast watching it once, its pretty entertaining, has great characters, an interesting story, and just about everything else that makes an anime worth watching. So yeah, i recommend watching it, its definitely a good show, just nothing OMG AMAZING.
