for the tl;dr crew, just skip down to fuhrer and i's replies to myself. Its got links to d/l the game, as well as an extremely short summary of the game, lulz. "its awesome so play it" basically. Im bored and i fucking loved this game and finished it like...yesterday or the day before. So i figured why not write a review about it. Posted Image [You Tanaka]
So first off, its a visual novel. If you dont know what those are, then wow. But i think everyone who actually posts here right now DOES know, but incase not - things like Planetarian (technically a 'kinetic novel' but meh), Tsukihime, Fate/Stay-Night, Kanon, Air, etc are all visual novels. Basically its exactly as it says, a 'visual novel'. You have art/graphics, animation, music, voices, and everything else that you'd get. To explain easier, its like playing an anime. It has every aspect of an anime, but with everything also in text (anything others say is voiced, so its like sub-titles in that case and like a novel when your reading non-dialogue stuff). ----- Posted Image [Tsugumi] Anyway, the game is in English thanks to a company that will make you want to say 'oh fuck that, im not gonna bother' or 'shit probably sux' - Hirameki. The same fuckheads who made that which is 'anime play dvds'. But fear not, first off, Ever 17 is Japanese, Hirameki had no part in its creation or anything. All they did was translate, which is the second point - Hirameki is known for shitty translations and the text usually looking like it was written by a middle-schooler, but in Ever 17's case, its very well written with only a few minor spelling errors and oddly written sentences. So little that they dont bother the flow of the game or anything at all, so not worth mentioning basically. ----- Posted Image [Sara] Anyway, the game itself. First off, its not a dating sim or romance title, even though there is obviously romance mixed in, the game is basically a very deep mystery story. So, while you do have to get every girl to like you (obviously only one at a time) to open their paths, this is the way you move the story forward. When you go with one girl, youll find out new things about them, others, and about the situation your in. Also, thanks to that mixed in romance, and the huge amount of character development, you really start to care about the characters and such. Its hard not to have huge spoilers though when trying to get across just how amazing the story is and how well written it is. But basically you see the game from either Takeshi or The Kid's point of view, Takeshi has two routes - Sora's and Tsugumi's, and The Kid has You's and Sara's. After playing through all four, which luckily have very little overlapping especially if you go from Takeshi's two routes to The Kid's, due to being two different people obviously, and some other reasons later explained in the game. Anyway, after you go through the first route you end up going down (its a VN so its up to you where you end up based on your choices) you realize that all you have is questions and no answers. So you play through the other 3 realizing that even then, you only have more and more questions, and a few assumptions of whats really going on. But the fact is, once you unlock Coco's path, the 'true ending', it answers every question and gives closure to everything, but jesus christ, it is a total mindfuck getting to the end of that route, especially when it takes most of the shit you 'think' is going on and says 'lol wrong' about it. Everything you thought, everything you 'knew' for sure, everything gets twisted around in ways that only make sense after finishing up her route completely. ----- Posted Image [Sora] Seriously, the story is fucking crazy in a good way, and its so well written that it makes it really amazing. The very beginning is a bit slow at first, and then it gets really good really fast. The best part is how you think you are finally piecing shit together then BAM during coco's path everything gets so crazy its beyond anything even GAINAX has made. Also, when you play as Takeshi or The Kid, there are very obvious differences - this is no accident (dont worry, this isnt really spoiler information). For example; Takeshi's path, you have these characters: Takeshi, Kid, You (not you, but a female lead named You, lol.), Sora, Tsugumi, and Coco. Kid's path, you have these characters: Takeshi, You (again, a girl, not you), Sora, Tsugumi, and Sara. Anyway, the story is fucking epic. ----- Posted Image [Coco Yagami] As for other things - One important thing is the voice actors. Almost every seiyuu is a VERY well known from their work in anime and they do an amazing job as their characters in this as well. And yes, its all in japanese audio-wise, no worries. The music is great, and always fits the scenes and really make the story that much more engrossing. Its really good. The art - its really nice, especially the cg's. The girls are really cute and stuff and the background are all really nice and such. Its pretty nice art, you can see some of it in my You sig and Sora sig. REPLAY VALUE! Guess what? You dont get the full story, or any of the answers unless you play all of the main routes i mentioned earlier, AND Coco's path which is only accessible after going through those ones mentioned before. So the replay value is high, because you HAVE to play it, especially if you fuck up and get BAD END as Takeshi (Its not one of the 4 you need to unlock Coco's path - its still more of the story so worth getting, but its an extra you dont technically 'need' to get to finish the story). Plus, the story is so damn good you'll WANT to figure out wtf is going on and will play it as many times as you have to until you can figure it out. Also, it comes with a lot of extras in comparison to most games and VN's. Eight endings and three epilogues in all. Unlockable System Voice sounds (like 'emptying the trash', 'booting up', 'error', etc which are all done by the voice actors for the game), Jukebox, Wallpapers/Art Pieces, and Screensavers. ----- Basically, this is fucking epic. Even if your lazy, you should sit on your ass while playing through this amazing VN rather than f5'ing /a/ all day or whatever it is you do. Theres really not enough i can say, especially with my shitty skills at praising things, to get across just how good Ever 17 really is. Although i hear about it being overrated a lot, and im definitely not helping in that department. Honestly though, at least to me, this is really one of the best stories ive ever read evne though it took awhile to get to the final conclusion. Oh and heres a few screens. The first one is how it looks when you play, the other two i took after making it so it cleared everything (they are from when i was trying to get images to use for sigs so i didnt want the text in the way) - The images throughout the review are from the CG in the game, i just cropped them to smaller sizes. Posted Image Posted Image Also, its an all-ages game even originally in japanese - theres no nudity (even though it says theres partial, i honestly dont know what its talking about...maybe cuz you see Tsugumi's thighs at one point even though thats nto really...'nudity' just leg? Meh. Anyway, yeah, theres no annoying sex scenes or anything, and only 2 implied ones for story purposes (very important story purposes actually) taht are just heavily implied but not gone into at all. Also, the game talks about a lot of concepts you may or may not know that would make the 'all ages' rating not really apply due to kids not being able to understand half this stuff - stuff like Schroedinger's Cat, a 4th dimension, different types of amnesia, a few basic concepts that they will explain if you dont know (stupid shit taht i didnt know the name of, but stuff i knew already like about buoyancy and stuff), perspective, and other things. I just mention that to further push the 'its actually DEEP' and makes you think thing. |
