Been awhile since I'd visited these boards and happened to see this thread. Thanks for the compliment, if you want to check out the progress thread on that sculpt go here. The cheapest clay I could find and what I ended up using for that sculpt was some stuff called Klean Klay. It was something like 1.75 a lb. I ordered the firm level hardness the first time and it worked o.k. The second time I ordered from a place called the complete sculptor, and although I ordered firm, it felt a lot softer than what I used the first time, so I can't really recommend going through that distributor. As far as which hardness to order, it really depends on the amount of detail your sculpt will need. If there's a lot of sharp angles and tiny details that need to be sculpted, then you want to go with at least firm or extra firm. I'm using the softer clay I got recently to sculpt the other pieces of armor. The best advice I can give is just be patient. If you check out my progress thread, you can see the vast difference the earlier progress pics look compared to the end result. Focus on getting all the proportions and symmetry done before you start focusing on the details. If you read through my progress thread, I believe I mentioned most of the tools that I used. The best thing I found that worked well is using those pink rectangular erasers. You can cut those up pretty easily to the desired shape or angle that you need to get a specific contour.
