My idea would be to do something positive this holiday season. Being a member of the 501st Special Operations Det (the best damned Det in the 501st), we should take it upon ourselves to do above and beyond this season to help a child in need. It's been a tough year for a lot of people, and I think we can band together and start early to make a positive difference while people have money to spend before the holidays. This thread is to consolidate interest and ideas. Sound off and let us know what ideas you have. I'd like us to do something if we can... Kev |

Great ideas kev, I think if we could find the member of our detachment that needs help the most, then that's what we should do. However, Any thing we do to help will be great. MICHAEL

As a potential project, the military folks are gearing up for Operation Christmas Stocking - to send stuffed Christmas Stockings to real Special Forces folks in Afghanistan (some of which don't even get a simple letter). It's relatively inexpensive and genuinely makes a difference in some troop's life who thinks nobody cares what they're doing on the other side of the world. Something to think about... |

Just put together a 10" Christmas stocking and fill it with goodies for our troops. You can send it direct (I'll post the address tomorrow) or if you send it to me, I'll put it in the morale mail here at Peterson AFB. Keep in mind, the stockings will go to all branches of the military. A card of support would be cool as well. |

Ok, here's the details... Capt George Noel, currently deployed in Afghanistan, is leading “Operation Christmas Stocking”. The program is working hard to provide all deployed soldiers (military and civilian) around Afghanistan Christmas stocking filled with goodies like candy, snacks, etc. There are several deployed members who do not receive mail, and who should not be forgotten during the holidays. Please support the effort by providing a 10-12 inches long stuffed stocking with Christmas goodies and a Christmas card. We need to get the package out by Nov 22nd in order for it to reach the deployed members in time. Please help out in any way you can. I'll personally head up the distribution from here and get them to George's office for the bulk mailing if you wish to participate. Kevin Christley ESC/CC2SG/OMI 1050 East Stewart Avenue Peterson AFB, CO 80914 I'll post pics of all the stockings we collect and send out in the bulk mailing & hopefully our stockings along withother groups will make a difference in a deployed soldiers life. Trust me from experience, the holidays suck when your in a foreign country away from your family and friends, so I'd urge everyone to do something to make their lives a little better and to show them (no matter what you may personally think about the war), that we appreciate them. |

My garrison is going to get involved with this. What kinds of things are ok to send? What things are not ok? If we send them direct, what address do we send them to? |

I'll get the Captain's mailing address so you can send stuff direct to Afghanistan, but will have to get the list of ok/not ok items. Basically for now they are looking for snacks (non-perishable) and I know that aeresols/penknives/bullets, etc are verboten. In the past, folks have sent X-mas cookies, but have stopped them if they have christian symbols on them, although santa is ok. I'll get a full list by end of day for you guys. |

Great, thanks! My garrison is having an armor party on the 20th. We are going to all put stockings together there to send. We are ok as long as they are in the mail on the 22nd correct? |

Yup. We were told that the Christmas cutoff for Afghanistan is 22 Nov, so if they are mailed out by then, they should arrive in time for Christmas. I spoke with Capt Noel's boss, Maj Beauchamp, and she thanks us for anything we can do for the folks over there. |

Here's the address: "There's a good list on www.anysoldier.com for what the troops in the remote units need. Goodies are always appreciated too, such as jellybeans, gum, hard candies, chocolates with hard shells that won't easily be crushed (M&Ms, the hard shelled malted balls, etc), candy canes, etc. The address to send to is: Operation Christmas Stocking Camp Eggers CFC-Afghanistan APO AE 09356 Thanks again! Capt. George Noel CFC-A CJ6 Plans Officer Kabul, Afghanistan" |

I'm going to take my 2 boys out tomorrow and get them to fill a stocking for the troops, they are 3 and 5yrs old. We'll get it mailed before the 22nd cutoff. I think it's important for the troops to know that we appreciate their efforts and I know how hard it is being away from home and family at Christmas. Great idea!! Here are the pics we took yesterday of the 1st shipment. A lot more to do today, but I just wanted to let you know that the 501st donated about 26% of the stockings we shipped! That's 52 out of 227! Great job, gang! The only group that beat us was a local elementary school, who donated 125. Maj Beauchamp was thrilled and thanks us for all our hard work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kev Christley TX-1422 Spec Ops Det Le |
