The 501st Special Operations Detachment was formally started in 2004 by Troopers Jason Allen and Corey 'Atin' Miller, with Kevin Christley (who was unknowingly working a duplicate effort with Joe Musso) welcomed in later to assist with the Det formation.

The Detachment was formed to provide a permanent home for the TX, or Special Ops costumes within the 501st Legion. The costumes include (per the 501st Charter):

TX- Trooper Special Ops (troopers from the Star Wars expanded universe, including but not limited to:
Swamp Trooper: Jedi Knight II - Video Game (not yet released)
Imperial Commando (black biker scout): Star Wars Rebellion - Video Game
Red Troopers (aka Magma Troopers) are referenced but not shown in the Episode IV Visual Dictionary
Black Troopers (aka Stealth Troopers) are Carnor Jax's personal troopers in Crimson Empire
Black Hole Troopers (painted black and coated in a stygian-polymer substance, answering directly to the Imperial Intelligence agent Blackhole (source: Star Wars web site http://www.starwars.com/databank/organizat...oopers/eu.html)
Sea Troopers - Aquatic assault stormtroopers trained to operate in marine environments, featured modified scout armor, with breathing tanks, flippers, and a helmet-mounted spotlight. (source: Star Wars website)
Spacetroopers - Zero-G armored troopers, massive suits of armor, powered by servomotors. Each suit functioned as a miniature spacecraft, with propulsion systems, sensor systems, and weapons. In full gear, a spacetrooper stood over two meters tall and was twice as wide as an unarmored soldier. (source: Star Wars web site)
Radtroopers, - Radiation zone assault troops, were a little known division of elite stormtroopers trained to handle irradiated combat zones. Their armor featured a lead-polymer substrate and a silvery reflective finish. (source: Star Wars web site)
Flying airtroopers (source: Star Wars web site)
Tunneling underminers (source: Star Wars web site)

When Jason was called to serve in the USMC and Atin was in the process of resolving some personal issues, Kevin proceeded to keep the Det alive by boosting the membership, getting a better forum host and working Jason & Corey's dream of making the Detachment official, which finally happenned in October of 2005.

At this time, Kevin Christley (L), Atin, & Jason are Co-COs, Trooper Mike (RedTrooper) was assigned as Executive Officer of the Det, along with Bill (TX-5466) as Stealth Trooper Lead and Bry (ShadowScout)(Primary) & Atin Miller (Alt) co-leading the Storm Commandos.

From an original seven members, we now have now grown to over 47 members world-wide and still growing.

It's our aim and goal to become the best damned Det in the Legion and work to promote the Special Operations side of the Empire while trooping and raising awareness and money for the Legion's various charities.

The Spec Ops Det was the first 501st Legion Detachment to have official XO, Captain of the Guard, Merchandising Officer, and Public Relations Officer. We also started the Det Leader Forum (with help from other DLs) on the Legion Boards.
