I think if someone wanted to use the dark trooper off of BF1 then that would work, but to make the one off of Dark Forces would be too hard... just my opinion... |

Hey, I never noticed that. It is lightweight, but not that lightweight, but I wonder if that's what was used to cast. You'll see this on eB for auction, a little pricey. |

![]() The Dark Trooper Project is the pinnacle of Imperial military engineering. While it has been hinter to being a droid, it is never confirmed in the canon media. The most prevalent theory is that the soldiers receive cybernetic modification and wear the armor. I have compiled a brief list of the explanations and shall provide what makes the most sense before I go into the details. The Phase I of the project, the battle droid, is just that. It is a droid equipped with a blast shield and a blade. These are the mass-produced first-wave of the project. During the design phases, this droid was looked at as the Dark Trooper itself, but that idea was soon disregarded as the Imperial Forces do not like taking the “thinking” element out of the situation. It is for this reason that the battle droids were only used in small numbers as a fore-runner to the Dark Trooper landing. The Phase II Dark Trooper is the most fielded variant of the Dark Trooper project. It is mostly a set of reinforced armor worn by a living trooper with an attached repulsorpack. While not extraordinary in design, it is very durable and is a step far above the standard stormtrooper armor. The troopers themselves are all normal human (not clone) given elite training at the Empire’s many training academies. Their reasons for not using clone troops are the lack of long-lifespan and their inability to adapt to the extensive cybernetic modifications required by the program. As such, the actual Trooper is generally taller, more muscular, and generally tougher looking than the average clone. Most are officers or carry an equal rank to an officer with regards to other troops. The Phase III Dark Trooper is more of a fully powered exoskeleton than a simple armor. It is a walking weapons platform with the ability to stand against most Speeder and a good many Walker-class vehicles. Unfortunately, it is a prototype armor and not cost-effective to mass-produce. With that being said, only a handful were fielded and usually issued to Dark Trooper Squad commanders and upper echelon heavy assault commando forces. The Imperial standard fielding plan for the Dark Troopers was three squads of ten troops each. A squad would have been composed of a single Phase I commander, three Phase II troopers, and six Phase I droids. Each squad would have a different objective to keep out of each others way. While some questioned the feasibility of using so few troops, they were referred to the fact that these are not a regular unit. A single squad of Dark Troopers was launched on the Tak Base on the planet Talay. Ten troops with 0 casualties to decimate and destroy an entire Rebel outpost. Not long after the Arc Hammer was destroyed by Rebel Forces, the overall Dark Trooper project was publicly cancelled. However, secret research kept producing the Phase II variant of the armor for Imperial Special Operations units across the Empire. Primary among those units are the elite Exogen- and Triumphant-class Dark Troopers who were fielded to various Imperial hot-spots during the height of the Civil War after the destruction of the first Death Star. There were unfortunately, no remaining production facilities which handled either the Phase I or III units. PHASE II DARK TROOPERS Comparatively, the Phase II Dark Trooper is the most canonical and economical phase of the series to build. The Phase I is too thin and solid for a costume and the Phase III is too large and bulky for most people to wear. As such, the Phase II of the program is the best choice for production and wear. The Battlefront Dark Trooper which most are looking at for their build, is not the canonical variant of the form. It is more of a good looking stormtrooper with a rocket pack. While there is no problem with this, it looks rather good, it is still not canon. ARMOR ![]() As you can see from the above picture as well as the picture at the end of the section, there are several very subtle differences between the Phase II (called Dark Trooper for the remainder of this post) and the normal TK. While I am not as experienced in TK as some others on this forum are, I am still a large fan and will do my best to describe the differences. COLOR The coloring on the armor is a medium gray, as opposed to the TK white. The darker areas are more of a darker gray than pure black. Only the body glove, seams, the edges, the hoses, and the detail on the chest and repulsorpack are black. The eye pieces, unlike the dark green are a dark red in color. HELMET This helmet is customized and has only a basic resemblance to a stromtrooper helmet. The eyes are essentially unchanged, but appear a little larger. The grill is larger, but still has the same cut and look to the TK. The ring is not connected to the tusks, but instead has a set of air slot which is where they end. The tusks themselves extend down to a set of normal aerators (some of which are shown with a red LED. The vocoder is stylized and is set along the bottom of the mask. The ring goes all the way around, as with the TK, but ends in a bit of a ‘v’ point in the rear. Finally, there are a set of red stripes along the aerators, like the blue ones on the stormtrooper helmet, but is located on the outer edge of the “cheeks.” CHEST The chest appears to be a base of a modified clone chest piece, but it is more exaggerated. The breasts are large and have a greater slope and the chest-piece bottom is again similar to a clone plate. There is a plate over the chest which has two parts. The first appears to be just short of covering the breasts and goes over the shoulders and down the back (it is a base for mounting the repulsor-pack). Finally, between the arms is a black plate which has a ‘v’ cut at the neck. It would appear that the neck of the base armor itself is cut down and this plate is the neck-piece used. There are two points on the lower portion of the chest for the connection of the hoses from the repulsorpack. There are also two hoses which go from the sides just below the breasts up under the shoulders. BACK The back of the armor appears to be a normal stormtrooper plate but includes a built-in repulsorpack. The pack itself is an angled pack with a raised black piece in the middle. It has two hoses at the shoulders which connect to the chest plate. These hoses are soft and appear to go along the body and not stick out. SHOULDERS The shoulder armor sticks straight out and resembles more a football pad or a Paldron. They are specially angled with the point at the top and have a raised portion along both the front and back. The edge of the raised portion is black and the raised portion can be colored to denote unit. BICEPS The biceps are custom. They extend from just above the elbow joint to about the ball of the shoulder. Underneath, there is a saddle-cut or ‘U’ under the arm for mobility. There is a stylized line down the front as well as a smaller one down the back which is black. FOREARMS The gauntlets are AotC Clone armor with a modification. This modification is a raised plate along the top of the forearm. The joint along the raise is black. The top of the raised plate can be colored to denote unit. HANDS Black clone gloves with armor plate on the back of the hand as well as small plates on the backs of the first length of each finger and thumb. The plates are connected directly to the material. ABDOMINAL The abdominal plates appear to be squares of plastic affixed to a black cloth. It would be easy to do this by using a heavy cloth and using it to connect the upper and lower body. They have a stylization which rises in the front and back and dips on the sides. BELT The Belt is a Clone belt without the larger boxes which ornament the belt. It is interesting to note that the “belt” is only located on the front of the armor and does not wrap all the way around the back. It apparently ends at the hips. CODPIECE The codpiece is a modified TK which has no lift on the front. However, there are two “fans” which extend from the codpiece and appear to be part of it. BUTT This plate is a modified stormtrooper plate. The modification is a little more stylization along the base as well as an outline along the back. It raises slightly in the back but is connected to the front in near seamless connection which is shown by a black seam. THIGH The thigh piece is a modification of the Clone thigh. It has a deep cut along the inside of the leg for mobility and a detailed raise around the upper end of the cut. CALF The calf armor is a modification of the stormtrooper armor. The basic piece is the TK calf-plate. The left and right sides has a black seam. The front has a darker gray knee plate which extends from the bottom of the calf to over the top of the knee. They are the same on both sides. SHOES The shoes appear to be unmodified clone shoes. BODY GLOVE This bodyglove is a clone glove; however it has some extra texturing. This extra texturing is in the form of a lighter colored cable running across the knees, elbows, under the arms, the crotch, and up the neck seal. These cables can be cloth, but a darker silvered cloth of some sort. I would suggest a silk cord or a tube of silk with some batting inside and sewn onto the glove to resemble cable. With the cord or silk, this would keep it flexible and comfortable. WEAPONS The weapons systems that the Dark Trooper’s appear to carry are varied, but fall into two categories. The first category is the Heavy Repeating Blaster which is shown as carried in the Empire at War video game. The second is the Dark Trooper Blaster Cannon which is shown in the Dark Forces video game. HEAVY REPEATING BLASTER ![]() The Heavy Repeating Blaster, made famous by the Snow Troopers on Hoth, is the weapon carried by these hulking brutes. It was first seen in the hands of the Dark Trooper in the Empire at War video game. Personally, I believe this is the best look for the Dark Trooper. It shows the Heavy Weapons capabilities of the program. The weapon itself is a simple enough design, though. It uses a Browning .50 caliber machine gun as a base with a few added extras. The toughest part is the lit screen on the back, but even that can be easily made with the correct materials. The main body is a Browning .50 caliber machine gun. The barrel appears to be an assembly which resembles a muffler assembly with a siphon for the muzzle. The top is a stylized box with an LED lit screen within. Finally, there is a grip on the barrel for the front hand to carry the weapon. With resin or ABS materials, this will be a fairly BLASTER CANNON Popularized by the Phase III Dark Trooper and some of the Phase II in the Dark Forces video game, this weapon is a simple, yet complex, item to make and carry. It would be top heavy because of the crest, front heavy because of the barrels, and unwieldy because of the single grip. When a Phase II carries this, they do so two-handed. OVERALL The best view of the Phase II Dark Trooper is the one below. It shows the details on both the armors and the Repeating Blaster cannon. I would also suggest a slight modification to the voice for this Trooper. Perhaps something more growling in the sound, as well as a little louder than normal for a TK voice amp.

I updated my above post to include an itemized list of each primary part. This is only for the look of the part, not exactly how it is built. I am still looking into that. |
