Could anyone tell me what exactly this costume entails? Is it simply a standard TK with a pauldron and a heavy weapon or are there more differences? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I'm actually in the process of sorting that out. From what I've been able to find out, it is actually a Clone Trooper variant, not a Sandtrooper variant as the Costume Resource Library lists. That may be a error or early listing that was never corrected. But as soon as we find out for certain we'll post a message. :)

The HWT is a TK with pack, pauldron, and BFG. It is based off a comic book represenation. It is a sop to those that want to have a pauldron and pack and BFG as a TK. since many people don't like the idea of a clean tk wearing a pauldron and pack and calling themselves TKs, and the MEPD doesn't like clean troopers wearing the same and calling themselves Sandtroopers the legion in its infinate wisdom came up with the HWT. It is still labeled as a TD in the CRL even though it is being handled by the TX det.

Think of it as a clean Sandtrooper. It's the only non-EU costume that we handle as nobody else wanted them (it was offered to the MEPD and FISD, but they both turned it down). I proved the pictorial existence of them in ANH and multiple EU comics and the LMO approved them as an official Legion costume.

I also believe the pack is optional, but I'll have to repost the specs because they share more with the TDs than the TKs.

Awesome! I had sent the LMO an email about this since someone in my Garrison is doing just this costume option and his reply was that he would need the backpack.

Kev, when you get a chance, if you can post those ref pics and standard here that would be awesome. Hey, maybe I'll mod this board too! LOL :)

I'll have to find it on the Legion boards, as it was quite a while ago. Thomas (the LMO) had some different ideas of where they should go, but in the end, they stayed here because the FISD and TD Dets didn't want them.

If there's enough interest and members, I have no issues with them splitting off and starting their own Det, but they have a home here as long as they want.

Wow. That took a lot longer than I had expected. Here's the thread on the Legion forums:

Wow, that was one hell of a read! Now I know why you were done with that thread after you made your point, Kev. Now i feel bad for bringing this up again. :(

So in trying not to be redundant of that topic, let me see if I've got this straight (I'm telling you, I learn something new every day about the 501st): what is cannon, what is the basic standard of almost every costume designation of the 501st, is solely what is seen on screen in the 6 films. Anything outside that medium, be it a unique character or variation of a cannon character, is then considered EU, non-cannon.

Am I understanding that correct?

As far as the topic of the HWT, I'm not going to open that debate again here, but is that debate still open? Is it worth discussing or emailing Thomas about? Because I do have my thoughts about it. :)

So if you're a HWT and just through the course of trooping, you get dirty, does that mean you get the boot from TX status and have to call yourself a sandy?

Maintaining HWT status requires regular cleaning and polishing eh? B)

I don't understand what the big deal would be. If it looks like a Sandy, acts like a Sandy, it must be a Sandy, right? I mean these guys get the TD designation away, right? So what is the big deal?

Just my 2c, but if there's not a significant difference in weapons/armor than what we currently have, its just splitting hairs!

Actually, if you think about it, it does take quite a bit of effort and skill to get your armor to look weathered correctly. I can understand a bit of pride that probably goes into being able to call your self a TD, and it's understandable to a certain extent that the guys over at mepd want to keep their detachment standards up to a certain level. Now to be fair though, I've seen some excessive amount of weathering done to some TDs, that to me actually bring it to a level of non-canon status just as much as being too clean. There is such a thing as over-weathering, and to me that should be treated the same as "under-weathering". If a detachment's standards are such that a clean trooper doesnt fit, then an overly dirty trooper should'nt either, but that level of thinking is based on the mentality that clean TD's should be put into TX's category. Personally, I think it'd be better to be cleaner than normal, than dirtier than normal, but you don't see that type of attitude towards mud wrestling TD's. :D

Well, the only reason we house them is because nobody else wanted them (trust me, I asked - but once they were turned down, we offered them a home).

Like any other costume categories here, once they find their own footing, they could split off and form their own Detachment once they garner sufficient numbers to support themselves.
