I like this pic a lot. Perhaps we should work to induct him?

Apparently it was featured at CIV, but like most of you, I can't find anything further about it. I'll keep looking.

Almost two years for me to figure out how I should reply to this... *deep breath* We know by now how heated (hah!) things can get about the Magmatrooper. Kevin, I know where you stand on this. You want red Stormtroopers to be Magmatroopers, even if it ain't so. I can only imagine how irksome it must be for you to see me keep harping on the opposing viewpoint.

I was at Celebration IV. My girlfriend and I both got that print. We both spent a while talking with the artist. We both love the WWII propeganda poster style. It is a false-colour painting, like the aforementioned '30s/'40s propeganda posters (Google image search it). Notice all the accessories and details are also red-tinted. It's artistic license. They are not Magmatroopers, or red-armoured Royal Guards, or even just Stormtroopers painted red. Sorry.

I'm somewhat frustrated by your resistance to this. A big part of why the Detachments exist is to research a costume or group of costumes, update standards, make things clearer and more accurate, and pass the findings along to the Legion Council to update their standards and costume list. To quote Commander Chris, late of the Clonetroopers board, "We must become better!" It'd be easy to clear this up -- just a note on the Magmatrooper that it's never been seen or described, and the red Stormtrooper re-labelled something more accurate to the documentation (my vote: Royal Guard Stormtrooper armour). Then we can maybe get started on things like the EVO Trooper, Jump Trooper, Incinerator Trooper, and other EU Trooper variants that have shown up in the last couple years. :)

I dunno what the argument is and am not taking sides but I was talking about red troopers a few days ago with a friend and this is the reply I got.

"Red "stormtroopers" were actually Imperial Guardsmen in armor that was otherwise identical to standard stormtroopers. They served under Lumiya in Lumiya: Dark Star of the Empire, in Star Wars Galaxy #3.

That makes them canon. I'm not saying it makes them acceptable as a current 501st costume. I think there was an action figure back in the day, which would be acceptable as a second source, but I haven't been able to turn up a third source."

Check elsewhere in this section (the "reference pics" thread, I believe). I laid out the history, timeline, and reference of both Magmatroopers and the Royal Guards in Red Stormtrooper armour so all could see the former and latter are two different things that got collapsed together in the early history of the 501st's costume list. But there's a lot of resistance to change, even if it's just uncollapsing the name and the visual. I feel just as strongly about the Storm Commando/Shadow Scout matter. *chuckle*

Red Stormtroopers have only appeared once -- in that story, which I and a couple others cited and even scanned and posted. Magmatroopers have never been seen or described -- there's only one mention of their mere existence that gets echoed over and over in various places. Both are canon. The red TK/TR is just like the Shadow/Blackhole Stormtrooper or the Felucian Stormtrooper Commander -- EU-official TK repaints. Magmatroopers, unfortunately, have no visual reference, but I imagine something similar to the Incinerator or EVO Troopers from The Force Unleashed (pure conjecture though that may be :) ).

I don't know of any red Stormtrooper action figure that ever came out. Are you perhaps thinking of the Coruscant Guard figure from the Shadows of the Empire merchandising campaign?

It also might have been a custom. A lot of people out there do better-than-professional quality customized action figures, some even with appropriate packaging. It's really quite impressive...

Gentle Giant Ltd. has offered a "Magma Trooper Statue" similar to the "Black Hole Trooper Statue" offered at the San Diego Comic-Con.

The Magma Trooper is one of their Collector's Club Exclusives.
