Hail, Special Ops! I come to you bringing gifts of works-in-progress photos of my Coruscant Guard helmet. I'm building this helmet by way of the "Cardboard 300 helmet" tutorial found on the RPF, only a bit more extreme. The basis process has been as follows: 1) Build a cardboard base. 2) Fiberglass over entire cardboard base. 3) Layer on Bondo over the fiberglass. 4) Sand Bondo smooth. 5) Coat with primer. 6) Apply spot putty, sand smooth, and re-prime. 7) Repeat step 6. 8) Cut out visor from motorcycle helmet visor. Right now the helmet is ready for paint. I've yet to build the mouth and ear greeblies, but I'm going to start on those tonight. I'm going to paint this is two coats. I figured that these guys, being the SWAT of Coruscant, get beat up a bit, so I'm planning in some pretty decent weathering and damage. Not enough to detract from the overall paint job, but enough to show that these guys are tough. So I'm gonna do two layers of paint. I don't want to go overboard and take the damage down to bare metal, but I'm going to have a darker red being revealed underneath the top coat to show some paint chipping. I plan on coating the helmet in the darker red tonight. Anyways, I have far too many photos to put in one post, so I'm just going to give you the link to the photobucket album and let you review the WIP without having to wait for dozens of images to load on this forum. http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f239/tor...20guard/helmet/ Here is the most recent step, though. In this photo, I'm test-fitting the visor into place. The primer seen on it is not the most recent layer of primer, though. This was after the second coating of spot putty. But currently, the helmet is primered and ready for paint. ![]()

Thanks fellas. Finished the mouthpiece today as well. It has three layers of mesh on it, one of which is on the outside of the helmet and the other two are on the inside. Eventually a speaker will be placed behind this for my voice amp. There aren't any really good references of the mouthpiece, so I pretty much designed it myself. The only part that comes from reference is the round bit at the bottom. One reference shows a little bit sticking out on the corner of the chin, so I based this mouthpiece off of that. ![]() ![]()

I finished primary construction tonight, finishing up with the ear caps. The resources are vague as to what exactly goes in the ear, but each resource shows just a simple flat plane in the ear (except the figure, which has a curved surface). I wanted to do some vertical ribbing, but after long consideration, I decided it would actually look more interesting with just the plain flat surface. So I painted the inside of the ear wells black and added some MDF Hardboard pieces as raised flat ear panels. I think it works rather well. It brings depth to otherwise flat lineart, but it remains true to most of the resources in it's utter lack of ear detail. You know what this means? I get to dirty it up now. ![]()

Well the exterior is now complete. I get to work on the inside now, but I'm gonna hold off on that until I get into a more comfortable financial situation and can spend money on hobby things. The great thing about this helmet is that it's been a cheap build, I estimate having not spent even $50 on it, and that's including an $11 visor. I'm gonna begin on the chest next week, though, but that's mainly because I came across a whole bunch of free cardboard. I won't be getting anywhere near finishing that for a while, but I'll have the cardboard forms ready for fiberglass soon. ![]() ![]()
