No, not the Rolling Stones, The ROLLRIGHT Stones! Has anyone else heard the legend about the King's Army and King Stone, turned to stones in the Oxfordshire countryside by a devious witch? Apparently, these ancient dolmen were once an invading king's army whose leader was challenged by the witch 'At the top of ye hill Long Compton ye canst see, then king of England thou shall be'. The King thought he would easily be able to see the Warwickshire village of Long Compton from the top of the hill - but hadn't counted on there being a great big barn in the way blocking his view! The rest, as they say, is history...

The five nearby standing stones - 'The Whispering Knights' - are the remnants of the King's own knights, so the legend goes.

Ghost and myself live pretty near here. My Grandad once took me there and told me that everytime you count them, you will come up with a different figure each time; and it appeared to be true.

I didn't pay much attention to the actual stories behind them back then though. =P

Scarecrow - yep, I've heard that story too. Although I wouldn't try counting them myself!
