Had an opportunity to try out the CZ16-35 for a day during the recent Volvo Ocean Race event. Too bad didn’t have the time to use it extensively but here’s some comparisons of how it perform against my Minolta 17-35mm f2.8-4.

Now please pardon my “unscientific” approach as I’m not a professional reviewer. All shots are taken handheld and in JPEG without post processing. All I did was to adjust the brightness a bit.

The range that interests me most was at the wider end. So I took a series of shots, the Minolta at 17mm and the CZ slightly zoomed in to show a similar field of view. The EXIF of the CZ read 18mm.

First is full view of the picture taken with the CZ at f2.8.

Here's how both of the lenses compare at 100% cropped at the center and edge of the shots.

Now, I've made a mistake by using a filter on my 17-35 Minolta. It has caused quite a bad vignetting at the edge and could have affected the test result. My good friend ETTL told me that his 17-35mm f2.8-4 has a much better edge sharpness than mine. Well, maybe mine is a bad copy and I will have to verify at a later date.

Nevertheless, the Carl Zeiss did not disappoint with its edge to edge sharpness which in itself is not an easy feat. The CZ also gives considerably higher contrast which make the picture look sharper and it has a characteristic slight Reddish cast as usual for Zeiss coating.

However, I’m quite surprised how good the Minolta measure up to the CZ which cost around five times more. As you can see, at f2.8, the sharpness is not too far behind at the center when viewed at 1024 pixels across. At f4 and above, the sharpness of the Minolta is almost as good the CZ viewed even at 100% crop. And if needed, a slight sharpening will do the tricks for the Minolta.

So at the end of the day, the CZ is quite a good lens but the price is a big deterrent for me. For me personally, Its image quality is not proportionately better. But hey if you have a deep pocket and perfection is what you’re going after, then by all means. But for me, I don’t think it’s worth the dough. A simple quick unsharp mask will do the tricks for me. :)
