Congrats on your new baby! Some vets charge more than others - on one hand, birds are pretty small, but on the other, they are exotic and need specialist vets. Conure check ups don't seem to cost that much though, as they are generally considered small-medium sized birds. Yes, a rope perch or even a natural wood perch (not manzanita, IMO it's too slippery) would do best. It's easier for them to grip when riding in the car. The Kritter Keeper thing does sound a little small...but he should be ok in it if that's all you've got. Some pet supply stores sell small cages pretty cheaply, and there's always thrift stores (just be sure to disinfect the cages throughly and pick one that doesn't look too old or rusty).
