Many parrots are not receiving enough calcium in their diets because owners do not give their birds any foods from this group. As with people, calcium is very important. Remember that too much cheese can cause constipation. Birds will also have a problem in digesting milk. Use only sparingly or as dried milk in cooking. COTTAGE CHEESE YOGURT this is a good source of calcium, potassium, and phosphorus. EGGS (any style, shells included) eggs are a source of B12 and the yolks are a good source of vitamin D, but eggs are high in cholesterol. MILK (used as dried in cooking) milk is a source of vitamins D, B12, and magnesium CHEESE (any variety is acceptable) birds love their cheese mixed with other foods, such as in macaroni & pizza. These cheeses include cheddar, mozzarella, muenster, provolone, swiss, american, and parmesan. Cheddar has the highest cholesterol values and calories, swiss the most calcium, parmesan the greatest amounts of phosphorus and sodium, muenster and cheddar the highest fat content. |
