Hi guys, I was just wondering if, other than constipation, anyone has heard of cheese being not so good for birds. I use cheese to treat Saffy, as she is just a total cheese freak, but a guy at one of the dealers told me that it's not very good for birds. I no longer give her cheese with her daily fruit and veg, and just save it for treats only, but now I worry about giving too much. She is VERY healthy an I havent noticed any constipation when I do give her cheese. Of course, I only give her small amounts, cause I am keeping her hungry for it, cause as I said, it's her treat.

hi sunnie, yeah, they dont digest milk well, but cheese in proportion will be ok. they get good sources of calcium from it as most parrots dont get much elsewhere. everything in modoration and well balanced. I wouldnt say daily, but a couple times a week should be ok

We allow TEENY TINY bites of cheese as a super treat. It just is very unnatural for a parrot to consume cheese, just think about it, how would a parrot in the wild locate cheese??? *L* Anyway, I think a tiny taste of any unhealthy food will be okay. Think about how many unhealthy foods, we as humans, consume. |

Thanks for your input. I only give her the tiniest bit at a time, cause I dont want her to spend time eating, as I use it as a reward for words or whatever and I want instant reward and to have her wanting more asap.

i also give a bit of cheese to mine, the problem with cheese or any dairy is the lactose in the product, this is what parrots cannot digest. |
