Bird "Cookies"

Tonight I made up a batch of bird "cookies" for my two caiques. I like to use these instead of Nutriberries, which seem to be very sugary, have artificial coloring, and are not organic. I'm trying to make the switch to homemade cookies.

I just made this up as I went along, so I don't have any measurements. It's pretty hard to mess up, though!

Ingredients I used (substitute whatever you've got in your house):

A couple handfuls of stale organic "cheerios" type cereal
Some leftover crushed whole-grain Wasa Crisp crackers
A handful of Heritage Grains flakes cereal
Several pinches of flax seeds
Minced dried organic mango and pineapple (one slice and one ring)
A dollop of maple yogurt (you could use plain, or omit this entirely)
A couple spoonfuls of fruity organic babyfood (I used apple-apricot)
A couple spoonfuls of veggie organic babyfood (I used summer veggies)
A couple spoonfuls of minced fresh veggies
1/3 of a banana
1 egg with shell
A dollop of PaHeCo oil

I put the cereals into my mini food processor and whirred them into almost powder, then added everything else and whirred it until well mixed. If the texture is too wet, add more cereal; if too dry, add more of any of the wet ingredients.

Form into small balls (about marble size) on a cookie sheet and bake at 350*F for about 30 minutes, or until solid and dry on the outside.

Let cool, then store in an airtight container in the freezer.

Since all of the ingredients are human-grade, I tasted a piece of one while they were cooling, and it was yummy!

Don't be afraid to substitute in other ingredients! I've made this with pellet dust instead of cereal and with applesauce or ricotta cheese instead of the wet ingredients. I always use an egg to give it higher protein and calcium.

I didn't know that egg shells are safe for GCC's. I've never tried that, but I sure will now!! Thank you...

You might have to crush the eggshells, so the birds don't choke.

Yes, that'd be a good idea. Thanks.
