from an unknown website -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My lovebirds, parrotlets and finicky budgies LOVE this. I have to leave out the hot peppers for the canary. Reading over it, it sounds complicated but it isn't. About 10 minutes prep time, 30 minutes cooking time. Dry, uncooked ingredients: 1/2 cup rice 1/4 cup barley 1/4 cup quinoa 1/4 cup hulled millet 1/4 cup rolled oats 1/4 cup dehydrated mixed vegetables 1/4 cup dried peppers, crushed 1/4 cup red lentils Cooked ingredients: 1/2 cup beans, any variety, mashed 1/8 cup carrots, mashed In a saucepan with a TIGHT fitting lid, bring 2 1/2 cups water to a boil. Add all dry ingredients. Stir and boil for one minute. Cover and decrease heat to lowest setting. Slow simmer for 20 minutes. Stir to make sure rice is tender all water has been absorbed. Stir in mashed cooked beans and carrots. My birds like this served warm, and it is the mainstay of their diet. You can substitute ingredients with stuff you have on hand. You can also add some spice if you like. My birds like cinnamon & cardamom or garlic & onion powder. Ingredient/water proportions are: rice:water=1:2, grains & lentils:water=1:1, vegs & peppers:water=2:1. The recipe can be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. I like to make a big batch and pack into ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen, run a little hot water over the trays (not the food) to loosen and freeze cubes in a zip bag. Cubes can be heated one or several at a time in the microwave. Check temperature before serving (warm, not hot). |
