I'm interested in making my own bird toys after seeing the prices of some of the nicer toys. Drs Foster and Smith have some leather squares, leather strips, vegetable dyed wooden beads, acrylic shapes and cotton rope. Would these stand up to a conure's determined beak? I have seen some toys with cow bells attached to them. Most of the ones I've seen are either nickel plated or copper. Would these be in any way harmful? What metals are conure safe? |

I would say go for it.... it all depends on how distructive your conure is. mine arent at all! they beat the heck out of any bell, but dont shred their other toys. as for the cow bells, the ones that are always on the ones i buy are either silver or copper colored, not sure exactlly what they are made of |

I figured it would be pretty hard for any bird to destroy a cow bell since they are used on cows! I added it all up and all of the toy making supplies would add up to about $35. Considering how many toys I could make out of all of that stuff, I think it's a pretty good deal! |

I just read on a bird toy safety website that if the clapper of a bell is made of lead, you will be able to dent it with your fingernail. |

I came across this site that has instructions and pictures on how to make your own toys. There are some pretty good ideas! I saw another site similar to this one only with more toys (and no pictures). I should try and find it.
http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/toys/ Here's another one for larger birds. I am going to try some of these. I really like the last one. http://www.fluffies.org/parrottoymaking.htm |

I found this awesome bird toy supply site in the USA that I'm going to buy my bird toy making stuff from. They carry dyed and undyed wood pieces, with their sizes ranging from parakeets to macaws. They also have stainless steel bells, veggie tanned leather, cheap cotton rope and plastic beads.

I know this is a bit old, but i make most of my birds toys now, simply because it's cheaper and they have a lot more fun with the things i can make than what i can buy. Here are some of the toys i've made, feel free to use any ideas you like.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Great looking toys, Belinda. That's something I should do more of myself. |

I made a muffin wrapper toy recently that my birds love!![]() I made it so it is a shredding/foraging toy so I can hide treats inside it: ![]() Lady foraging: ![]() I should lower it a bit so Daphne can reach! She loves to shred things (I put a branch from my apple tree in their cage a few days ago and it is already bark-free thanks to Daph).
