So I stop at the dollar store for something and find a bunch of colored popsicle sticks, ice cream sticks, beads and colored pipe cleaners. I think I am on to something.

So $8 dollars poorer I get home, and pull out the Dremel tool (a small hand held drill) and start drilling holes in the sticks.

This is too easy and Sky's favorite toys to shread are those with colored sticks! And at $6 or more per store toy, this is cheap. :D

Sky is watching. :parrot:

Then I put some beads on the pipe cleaner and a stick and now Sky is involved.

I just fold the ends over into the adjoining beads and twist. Looks safe and cheap so far.

So we make one toy and meets with Sky's approval.

Then I put a bunch of beads on a pipe cleaner and Sky has not let me near it for the last hour. She wants that end bead with a passion. I get a Sun growl if I go near it. :confuse:

Whoops, perhaps this should be moved to the "How to Section?"

Would the metal in the pipe cleaners be bird safe if she chews it?

That's cute that she growls when you try to get near the toy. :P

Good point. I cover the complete pipe cleaner with beads and have watched her given the option of a fuzzy wire and a bead, she goes for the beads everytime. Guess they look more like food? But she does like the "rubbery" insolation of speaker wires! I have found some colored tye wraps and will look for some small chain. Her big fun seems to be making them with me. She likes the grab the very next bead I intend to put on. Every one! And when I complete one, she loves to drag it away like "mine!" ;)

Sky does get very vocal but in a Sun talk kind of way. She grunts, growns and warbles for many types of reactions. Like she drops my screwdriver off the table is one sound. Then struggling trying to pick it up over my arm is another. And then there is a whole another vocabulary when I let her out after being in her cage for longer than she feels was necessary! :angrysmiley:

More good home-made bird toys. I'm not sure what pipe cleaner's use for metal. Might want to make sure it is a 'bird-safe' metal (not lead, etc.).

Good point. The source is actually China via a Canadian importer. Nothing is stated on the package other than they could be a choking hazard. But anything from China is up-for-grabs. I got some stainless wire from the hobby store just to be sure. While I was there I saw a few trains that Sky may like!

Also any imported candies from south of the border, may have been created in lead molds. So any hard candies with such origins should be trashed.

Wonder if there are USA manufacturers of bird food products that do not use China ingredients? I was talking to one person in the know and what they put in dog foods is really criminal.

You cannot be too careful

The wooden products you are using are from Creation station? if i can see correctly. Totally safe, and a very good company. I use those products all the time. They do a bag of wooden beads, all sizes, and also a bag of wood beads, bigger then the plastic beads you are using. You may want to check those out.
They also do natural raffia, and i use that for threading, or just hang a huge bunch to make a shredder, my birds love nibbling on that.

this pic will give you an idea of the size, its Kaeci trying out one of Biggles foot toys
