Conure Crazed!!!!!!!!!

I have a pile of chains from the department store where I am Maintenance Manager. these are very shiney, textured chains that were used as barriers for indicating where checkout lines were at one time. the links are about 1inch wide by 1 1/2 inch long. reminds me of chains from a swag lamp. I was wondering if they would be okay for the birds to play on. I would like to use these to attach toys and knotted rope, bells and pieces of fabric for the birds. I can get a pic of the chains when I go in tomorrow, they are in my office. |

Without seeing them, it's hard to say if they'd be safe or not. I'll wait for some pics (use something like a coin to compare the size of the chain openings, if that makes sense). I'd be worried about a foot getting caught in the chain, but once I see the size, it may not be as big I'm thinking (if that makes any sense too.. either.. somewhat..)....

I agree with conure58, without seeing the chains and knowing what they are made of it is hard to say if they are safe for birds.

They look nice and shinny ,but it is what they are made of what is the real problem, as you know some heavy metals are lethal for birds, and you know how much or babies like to chew.

Very true. Zinc is bad, as is any galvanized metal (which is zinc anyway). Of course, lead is a no-no. If they're stainless steel, they would be ok. The holes in the links look large enough where a foot shouldn't get stuck, although the area where the links close (the small gap in each link), could possible get a nail caught in it. |

The first 3 I'm guessing may be zinc or pot metal with zinc coating. But the 4th may be stainless steel and looks to have been soldered closed. If it feels much heavier than the other 3 it's probably fine. If I understand correctly, zinc is toxic if ingested over a long period of time and is a real problem with some powder coated cages and how easily it chips off. Some people believe it's ok for fasteners, but I use ss just to be safe. |

Thanks guys. I haven't brought the chains home yet. Since I'm not sure what they are made of I'm a bit leary of them. I want to see if I can find plastic ones anyway. I'm going to try Oriental Trading Company (OTC) for a lot of toy supplies. so hopefully they have plastic chains. |
