Slave to my Parrots

Ok. So I'm feeling bird-toy poor and my birds are feeling like they need to eat the woodwork this week. Aha! A whole coconut in the produce department for $2.50! So I drilled two holes, top and bottom to drain the "milk". Then I used a wood saw to cut the coconut in half. Now I've got the freakin' thing cut and I can't figure out how to get the meat out of the coconut. I've tried scraping with knives and spoons and would have used my melon baller but I can't find it........ Any ideas out there?

I've never used a coconut before, but I was wondering the exact same thing! I found this information off of a website--it sounds pretty easy: After cracking a coconut open and draining the liquid, bake the two halves in a 400 degree F oven for 25-30 minutes. The fresh coconut meat will come out very easy with a little help from a soup spoon. And your kitchen will have a tropical scent!(http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf813508.tip.html). May I ask how you cut yours in half? I've been wanting to make some coconut toys for awhile, but I'm concerned about how I would keep the thing from rolling around while I'm sawing it.

I was going to say it would need to be baked... god knows how they eat them on a deserted island!!! LOL!!! (i'd be dead already.. cant start a fire, and i've drank too much salt water! not to mention the fact that i'm bleeding out from cutting the damn thing in 1/2!!!) |

Hey you guys are right! I also found a website that gave the baking instruction. 20-30 minutes was about right and the coconut meat came out relatively easy using a fork to pry in between the meat and the shell. It left the shells totally clean! To cut the coconut, we placed it on a cutting board and my dearly beloved wore heavy work gloves (not sure whether to protect him from the rough shell or my sawing?). He held the shell on both ends and I used a wooden hand saw. Not for the weakling - but it worked. And the reason I drilled holes in both ends first was to drain the milk out so it wouldn't ooze all over when we sawed it in half. I highly recommend a partner for this project. The coconut is not cooperative! I plan on drilling holes around the edges of the nut to attach various attractive chewy things. I'll take a picture when I'm done. |
