Ok, we have had Ziggi since Sunday. He is a sweet, charming little snugglebug with a very large attitude. He is very bossy and demanding, this I know will just take a lot of time and patience. He prefers my husband but generally is very social with everyone in the house. The big problem we have is that if he doesn't get his way, or sometimes just for the sake of it he will bite hard, often times drawing blood. Everyone here knows not to react to it, but what else can we do to stop it? It does not seem to be triggered by any one thing in particular. In his previous home he was smacked for biting by the husband, which is why his owner (the wife) wanted us to take him. She really did love this little guy, as do we. I have dealt with biters before, and much bigger ones but I swear he thinks he's as big as a Macaw! This being my first conure I would love to hear some tips and tricks that you all have learned over time! Thanks

Kermit also bites if he does not get his own way, he is also very bossy, i tried not reacting and ignoring this behaviour, but it did not work, some others would suggest putting him somewhere else or back in his and ignoring him for a while when he bites, but it did not work for me. What i did with kermit , and also did it with Oliie the meyers parrot. but the others might disagree with me , is a took hold of his top beak gently when he was biting and held on to it for a while, he did not like it much but it did not hurt him, it soon stopped him biting. this is just my personnel opinion some of the others might have some suggestions |

Conure Crazed!!!!!!!!!

When Miley bites I give her a dirty look and tell her no biting. she chitters at me acting really innocent, and bites again. I hold her upper beak too, which to her means PLAYTIME! but what I found is to distract her. I don't have a clicker, but ignoring her and suddenly loving up Mattie really gets to her and then she wants a cuddle to make up. I can't touch Marley. I have to ignore him with my arm resting in or on the cage for him to come to me. |

I am amazed at how smart these guys are. I had to towel him this morning before I left cause he just refused to go in the cage and I was not liking the biting for blood thing, lol. This afternoon he took off and landed on top of the fridge. A no no in our house. He kept biting at me when I would try getting him to step up, so I pulled out the towel and said "ziggi, step up or towel". He lifted up one foot, put his head down and stepped up. So far it is working to just show him the towel! Lol! |

He is slowly learning, lol. I have had to time him out a few times but so far a cross voice and a threat of the towel seem to do the trick. He is really pushy about perching on the head (my pet peeve) but he is learning the down command :-) My husband has nicknamed him the little chipmunk because he burrows in to my shirt and sleeps on his back. A new one for us as our other birds do not. And of course surprise surprise he loves his bath. So much so that he will literaly dive in to the kitchen sink while I am getting a glass of water, lol. I have a special light shower head attatchment for the tap, he doesn't want it, lol. I have fallen for the conure now. The breeder we are buying Leroy from has another little black cap, about 8 months old. If she is still hanging around come fall I think I will buy her too. She is the only one from her clutch that never sold, and everyone keeps passing her by because they all want a baby baby. But shhhh... don't tell my husband, lol. |
