Okay, so I have been to the breeder and seen how she cares for the birds, and it is extremely clean. I've had lots of comments about how impressed many people were about the setup she has. So my question... how pertinent is a checkup and fecal when it's an only bird?

Is it just a really good insurance type thing, or if the bird is defiantly coming from a clean, well kept breeder, is it not really necessary?

I already found a good avian vet, they want $40 for the visit and $50 for the fecal. I'm planning on taking it in, just wondering now necessary it is. Thanks.

Oh... also... when I bring the bird home... it's going to be about a 2 hour car ride. Should I just get a decent sized cardboard box to keep it from seeing all the changes and freaking it out, or I could take my sleep cage... what would you all recommend?

Birds can hide illnesses well, so it is probably a good idea to get him checked out. Try to find out if your breeder has a health guarentee. If the vet finds something wrong with your bird, such as a disease or birth defect, the breeder may give you a refund. Wow, that is really cheap for an avain exam! When I took Orrin in, they charged me over $100...it was cheaper to get my cats and horses vaccinated! :buggy:

Definately bring a smallish cage to bring your little conure home in. A dark scarey box is no place for a baby! :badidea: Make sure to secure the cage in the car so it doesn't tip.

I look forward to hearing more about your conure once he/she's come home!

I agree with Hannah. See the vet and use the sleep cage. You can use a small blanket or towel to partially cover the cage if you're concerned about your new bird getting scared while driving. When I moved from MN to TX with my 2 (drove here), I partially covered their cages and they made the 2 day trip (with an overnight stay at a motel) fine.

Wow I'm really thankful for my vet. Office visit is $20. cat , dog, bird, don't matter. The DNA testing was about $45 each bird.I think. but generally most blood work is about $20, and vaccines are about $10 to $15 I think. I even had my St Bernard Spayed and a dental cleaning done and Paid less than $200. You cantell this office is doing it because they care about the animals. not the money.

Wow Jo! It may be cheaper to drive up to PA and get it done there! lol... well maybe not quite...

My grandfather is actually looking at getting a blue front amazon from the same lady for himself, so it may be a full car on the way home, lol.

Deffinatly do a well bird check up. Not only does this give your avian vet a base line for your bird, but you can get your vacines done too. As posted before, make sure you know what the heath guarantee is, and do they have a certificate. Deffinatly use a small cage, i normally drape a towel over the top, sides & back, leaving the front open. A rope pearch is good for car rides, its easy to grip on to.

For travel I use the rope perches (softer bumps) and a swing all facing forward. I also place everything lower than usual and a towel on the bottom for added safety should they fall. 5427 miles and they haven't had any problems!

Thanks everyone, the guarantee is 72 hours, pretty standard. I talked to the vet today, they said they normally don't do a blood panel, just a fecal stain and physical evaluation. I was wondering, would a "kritter keeper" type enclosure work? I have a couple of those, which are about 10" tall x 6" wide x 12" long.

That might be a little small (trying to picture what it looks like.. and failing.. ). You'd really want something large enough for him to stretch his wings without hitting the sides of the enclosure. If that's the only 'cage-type' enclosure you have, he'll probably be ok for the 4 hour round trip.

Well i know that my baby dusky comes in its own little carrier with a perch in it when i pick the little guy up from the airport . Looking forward to playing with him , if anyone has had a dusky before they probably know they may not be a colorful conure , but they sure are smart and very loving conures . My previous dusky was a sweetheart . Hope the new baby has a good personality .
