Hope i put this topic in the right place ! I have been covering my bird cage with sheets always , but it seems like light is still filtering through at night . I only realize this because the birds are in my master bedroom at night , and i am an avid television watcher at night , and sometimes fall asleep with the t.v on . Lately i have been hearing the birds moving around a bit at night , which made me wonder if the light from the t.v is going through thesheets , which arent very dark . I just purchased a flannel king size comforter to put over at least 3 sides of the cage { Front , and 2 sides } It is black flannel king comforter , i didnt plan on covering the back of the cage with it though , i was just going to use a sheet back there . Do you guys think that will cut off their oxygen ? I am just scared of them running out of air . I heard though that flannel helps keep them warm at night , and we have the central air set at 72 degrees , whoch gets a little cold at night . I have them away from the air vents , but i have heard each one of them sneeze a few times throughout the day . i havent heard excessive sneezing , and they dont have discharge when they sneeze either . I just hope they arent getting sick , i called the vet , and he said only come in if it is excessive sneezing with discharge . Back to the Cover .. { Sorry i strayed off topic there } Do you think it is safe to cover the birds with that black flannel comforter on the front and 2 sides with the sheet in the back ? I just want to keep some of the t.v light out of their cage , and i know black helps darken it for them . Do you think they will have enough oxygen ? The comforter says it is 60% cotton , and 40% polyester . Just want to make sure its safe before i stop using the sheets . Other question : Do any of your birds have occasional sneezes ? Is that normal ? Both of my birds sneeze a few times a day . No mucus or anything though . |

I use a very large comforter over Summer's cage and a pair of smaller flannel-type blankets over Kahn's cage and they're covered on all 4 sides. There's no chance of them running out of air using blankets or comforters. As for the sneezing.. Summer sneezes many times during the day, while Kahn may do it one or two times. Neither one has ever had any nasal discharge or illnesses at any time that I've had them. Sneezing seems kind of normal for them. I like to joke that Summer is allergic to people. I guess I should say Summer may not have any nasal discharge, but sometimes when she sneezes near my face, I have to clean my glasses (birdie boogers, I guess.. )

Thanks for the info Mark , i am relieved to hear that ome conures just sneeze every now and then . That is what the vet had told me that they are just like people . We sneeze every now and then also . As for the comforter , i am glad that i can use that nice black flannel i bought , it should help keep it really dark for them , plus trap some of the central air conditioning out . They dont rufflr their feathers alot , but i worry about them getting cold at night . 72 degrees isnt that cold , for me its kinda hot . I rather have it at like 69 degrees , but then my wife and daughter are freezing . I guess i am just warm blooded . |

You could go ahead and post the custom cover info in the "How To" section of the forum: http://s11.zetaboards.com/Conure_Crazy/forum/18469/ |

Nice cage and cover Becky , your cage for your bird is very similar to mine , except mine is a little larger 40" x 40 " x 60" Tall . Your cover is very intuitive , and i like the idea with the velcro straps and hanging from the bar . You should supply your photos and advice in the section Mark pointed out for people , as well as myself to make our own . |

I have also custom-made (well, I forced someone else to, I cannot sew to save my life) three cage covers for my birds. The sennie has a flannel bed sheet, the two budgie cages have fabric covers, one is from Africa and the other even has patterns of budgies and carolina parakeets on it. I'll look at your article now Becky. You shouldn't worry about them sneezing, unless it's constant or any discharge. Edited by hal9000, Jun 24 2009, 04:36 PM.
