Seeds? Pellets?; A question about food brands.

Hello all. :hi: I just joined the forum and have read a bit about the food, but I have a question. I understand that a lot of their diet should be vegetables, beans, and fruit. However, I wanted to know what kind of food I should put in the cage for them to eat whenever. At the pet store I work at, we have Nutriberries, Ecotrition, Kaytee, Zupreem, Sunseed, and one other brand I can't remember. Are any of those good for conures and should I add some seeds like thistle, flax seed, or millet? The Quaker parrot which we have had been on sunseed and Nutriberries, and he loves the latter. I understand that peanuts, corn, and sunflower seeds are over-used and should not be fed often if at all.

And suggestions or opinions on those brands? :help:

Best advice i can give you :

Pellets : Zupreem , Avian Maintenance { Natural Flavor } , or Zupreem Fruit Flavor pellets . I have both , and i mix them together , and they love those both . { Remember the fruit flavor stains with their poop , but they love it !

Nutri Berries : THEY LOVE THESE ! Cut them up into 4 slices per ball , or they drop them all the time because they are pretty big for some claws , My sun conure has huge claws , but the dusky has small ones and drops them alot . So cut them into 4 slices per ball . They love the tropical fruit flavor one , its mango , pineapple , papaya , and some other stuff mixed in , but they go CRAZY for Nutri berries .

Roudybush : These pellets are great for conures , and they LOVE them . They are natural .

Millet : I give my birds a millet every 2 or 3 days , but i put it in a millet holder , that hangs , so they have to work hard to eat the millet , and they wont devour it all in 1 sitting . It isnt bad for birds really .

Fresh Washed Fruit : Grapes , they LOVE them , Quarter slice them . Apples , they love . Slice them small . Oranges , They love them . Watermelon , they go CRAZY for , slice it small with absolutely NO SEEDS , Black or White seeds . Cantaloupe , They LOVE it , they keep sucking the water out of it , then they eat it . Blueberries , They eat , but leave some behind , but it really stains with their poop .

Fresh Veggies : Corn off the cob , i take it off the cob for them , Broccoli , they eat it , but not much . Carrots , Slice them very small pieces , they eat it , but not crazy for it . I havent tried any other veggies yet , but my birds prefer fruit , but i am trying new veggies continously .

That about what i believe is a good diet , my bird love the stuff , and seem healthy .

Seeds : Dont give too many , i just add small amounts mixed with the pellets { Zupreem } that i leave with them all day when i am gone .

Seeds are supposed to only be 15% of the birds total diet .

:)

When I first got mine (16+ years ago), I had no idea that they shouldn't eat much for seed. It took quite some time to get mine weaned off seed and eating pellets/fruits/veggies. I still give them some seed, but it's not the majority of their diet anymore. Kahn loves his safflower seeds and Summer loves a peanut once in a while.

So, can nurtiberries be fed everyday with some Zupreme and/or roudybush pellets, or should they be given as a treat?

Also, Lafeber (maker of nutriberries) makes a pellet food for parrots too. Is this any good?
Ingredients: Ground corn, wheat, oat groats, soybean meal, cane molasses, dried whole egg, corn gluten meal, dicalcium phosphate, ground limestone, iodized salt, dl-methionine (an essential amino acid), l-lysine (an essential amino acid), choline chloride, zinc oxide, manganese oxide, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, ethoxyquin (a preservative), ascorbic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), niacin supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, biotin.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude protein (min.)......14%
Crude fat (min.)..............4%
Crude fiber (max.)...........2%
Moisture (max.)..........10.5%

I would stick with Zupreem as my number 1 pellet choice !

You could try the Lafeber , i am sure its not a bad product , most people prefer Zupreem , and have excellent healthy birds .

As for the Nutri - Berries , you can give your bird 8 - 10 of these per day , but i give about 3 - 5 per day , it keeps them fresh and interested in the nutri berries , and it helps when you mix in fruits and veggies , and remove all food bowls when you do , so you can get them to concentrate on trying new veggies / fruits / etc . If you have the nutri berries in there when you present fresh stuff , they might ignore it and go after the nutri - berries .

Good Luck with your balanced diet ... :B:

I forgot to answer your first question :

Yes , Nutri Berries can be given as a daily diet , and they are nutritional . 3 - 5 per day / per bird .

Conure Crazed!!!!!!!!!
I feed mine a combination. I have multiple food dishes because they all have different tastes. The conures get a bowl of Zupreem fruit pellets, Mattie, my sun comure loves the banana pieces, a bowl of zupreem gourmet food that is little round pellets, dried peas, apples and tomatoes or red peppers. they also get a bowl that has a combination on safflower plus for parrots and a small flat kaytee pellet. they love sprouted beans.

the Tiels, lovebirds and budgies get kaytee fiesta plus, and a bowl of zupreem fruit pellets for budgies. I add a powdered A/D suppliment to the tiels dishes because both my hens are suddenly laying like farm chickens. only one set are fertile tho. :(

tiel tiels love sprouted split peas.

give millet sprays occasionally as a treat, they love egg treat sticks. all of my birds go crazy over the tropical nutriberries. I bought a good sized bag and put it into a 5 qt icecream container. oh and plain popcorn. I pop it in a brown paperbag in the microwave and my conures go insane when they hear the bag rattle!

I also give frozen fruits and veggies, thawed of course, but not everyday because I swear they have food fights with the black berries. My cherry head Tee-Jay loves them.

real bananas are not a big hit yet. they like to pick at bread when I'm trying to eat a sandwich. Marley loves the helman's mayo for some odd reason.

One of my tiels loves potatoes. especially mashed.

I tried hard boiled egg.... once. that is something you only want to leave for a very short time. i goofed and left it in a dish for the birds all day..... it smelled awful. needless to say they didn't care for it either. scrambled should be fine. I wouldn't microwave it though. but that's me. I think the eggs come out looking rotten.

One good thing about eggs and birds is, they don't mind a little egg shell in their eggs. It's actually good for them (calcium).
