Hello Everyone Does anybody know if the White seeds in watermelon can be consumed by our conures , I always take out the Black seeds , and the white seeds before i give my birds the watermelon . I was just wondering if the white seeds are harmful in any way to the birds ? If anyone knows , that would be awesome !

From what I've read, watermelon seeds are fine to give to Conures. Apple seeds are a no-no though. Apple seeds contain a small amount of cyanide (from what I've read anyway). Even this seed mix contains watermelon seeds: http://www.avianorganics.com/Pacific_Deluxe_Parrot_Seed.html *Our Organic parrot seed mix includes the interesting addition of watermelon seed; providing calcium, potassium, magnesium and other essential trace minerals. It looks like the black seeds are fine too.. |

My question is how large pieces of watermelon are you giving your bird? The way you word it, you seem to be giving really big chunks of watermelon to your fid. Just remember, their stomachs are around the size of a nickel. You don't want them to fill up on something with no to minimal nutrients. |

I cut them into very small pieces , as a treat only . The watermelon always has tons of white seeds , even when you cut it into small pieces . My birds wont eat any fruit , unless it is basically diced into very small pieces . I just try to mix stuff up fot them , i give them vegetables also cut very small , but they are picky with their veggies . Then when i give them any type of fruit , it is in small portions , and they usually dont finish it all . Also , thanks for the article Mark . |
