So, I introduces Desmond to you all back in May, and he has made our lives so much more fun! I want to make sure we are making his life as enjoyable as he is making ours. We got him a cage that's 18 inches in diameter, 36 inches tall. We have some toys in there, but he never really seems to play with them, and whenever we leave, he's super bummed, and always so stoked to see us when we get back. I want to get him some fun toys so he's not super bored when we're at school/work and make some sort of play area for him when he's out of the cage, so he always has something fun to do. I'm not sure if you can "overstimulate" a bird or not, but I wonder if he's just getting bored? We always make sure he's out with us when we're home, and he loves loves LOVES getting his head scratched, and we always make sure to do that. Anyway, any thoughts are welcome!

Also . . . not sure if I should start another topic for this, but he's only 8 mos. old, and I want to start trick training him. If there's another topic on here or a book that is a must read for me, I'd love to know!

Thanks again!

Here's a book on parrot tricks.

Parrot Tricks by Tani Robar and Diane Grindol

Tricks are stimulating so that could help with boredom.

But maybe a friend is the way to go....if you think you could handle/afford another. :)

I agree with both Jo and Haley on getting your green cheek a cage mate !

It would help with the birds social needs , and the bird would have company while you are away from home . It doesnt cost really much more than what costs you are use to spending now . The only cost will be the purchase of another Green cheek , which can range anywhere from as low as 100.00 to maybe 250.00 . Unless of course you go for a GC mutation , which can cost a bit more . Then you will use up a little bit more food , but that is not a tremendous cost .

There are breeders that sell GC's for 100.00 , there is a bird breeder website with probably over 75 of them for sale .

Good luck with whatever choice you make , if you want to know where to locate breeders , we can let you know the website .

haha, come on guys, I was looking for cheapercheaper alternatives than getting Des a mate :P (We are planning on that a little down the road, of course). And yes, I'd be very interested in finding out breeder locations, we got Des at a Petsmart for $400 (now kicking myself for seeing the prices you guys mentioned). So, do any of you have experience with finding out your conure's gender? I've heard that you have to get a bit of their blood to send in for DNA sampling, I still don't know if he's really a he! :)

Anyway, sorry I'm asking like a million questions in each post, but I appreciate everyone's interest and responses. Desmond thanks you too (especially as he reads this and gets excited at the prospect of a cage buddy!) :nana:

Keep the advice coming, thanks!!

Your avatar still freaks me out!! :laughingonthefloor:
But it's cool too..

I know you can use a few breast feathers to find out what sex you bird is. I know there's a link somewhere on the forum to a site that talks about that. Anna would probably be able to find it. It's pretty much impossible to tell what sex Conures are (unless they start laying eggs, like my Summer did). I still don't know what sex Kahn is, although I'm assuming he's a male.

Millions of questions??? I wish there was an internet when I first got started with these Conure Birds, so I could ask questions about them!!
I was clueless when I got my 2 little monsters. They're still around, so I must have done something right..

seriously, get a playmate. even if it means getting a budgie in a separate cage. Your conure needs companionship. a lonely bird will withdraw from everything and tend to over react when it does get attention. and that over reacting could be that it's happy to see you and want to play or it could be the opposite and bite the living :CEN: out of you. turn on the tv or a radio when you are gone if you still don't like the idea of letting your "child" have a playmate.

as far as your questions about sexing the bird, your veterinarian can direct you on that one.

You think you paid too much for your conure? I paid over $600 for my sun conure and I passed one up at the bird social I went to for $250. I still spent over $500 though but that was on 3 other birds.

Where the heck is Provo anyway??

Provo is in Utah..

I paid $400 for Summer in 1993.. Only paid $75 for Kahn (1991). I thought they were both pretty reasonable at the time. I got them both from the same breeder. Sun's are actually less now than when I got Summer. Pet stores are always overpriced. The PetSmart here (locally) has a Sun for around $700. Way too much..

leave a radio on during the day, when your not home

have you tried foraging toys? lots of foot toys too... www.theperchstore.net has a great variety of foot toys, and other foraging toys that you can add treats and toys to.

rotation is the key... dont keep the same toy in the cage. if you find he doesnt like leather type toys, add something plastic with a bell or something :)

as for dna testing, i've had all my conures tested, the green cheeks we did by feather, and the bluecrowned we did blood.

you can find various places on the "weblinks" area of our forum :)

I'd rather die while i'm living than live while i'm dead!
NO MATE IN THAT CAGE! Come on people... that cage is barely big enough for one GCC (too small IMO), and you think he should add a second? A cage that small will probably end up with your bird being very timid and scared... a long tunnel basically is what it is to him. Also, there is no guarantee that another bird would get along!

Okay. To answer the question at hand. What kind of toys do you have? GCC's generally love shredder toys over wood block toys. Also as has been mentioned, foraging toys. You need to keep their mind stimulated.

Also, I would teach the bird to do tricks. In the wild birds have to figure stuff out, and when we put them in a cage they don't, so they get bored. Tricks help them figure things out. http://web.me.com/dougandmona/Site/Not_Stupid_bird_Tricks.html

And I would clicker train him first. A lady I know (avian curator for Zoo World in PCB, FL) has a website that's very good - www.avitrain.com - I would also recommend Karen Pryor's book called "Don't Shoot the Dog"
