Conure Crazed!!!!!!!!!
I am posting this heartbreaking picture to show something that Breeders will occasionally face. Out of 7 eggs, 3 died in their shells, one was a dud, and this is my only survivor of the 3 that did hatch. I am in tears as I type this as I am doing everything posible to save this remaining baby cockatiel.

I removed it from the nest box just a couple days ago and I am hand feeding it myself. I can only feed it maybe 2 ML of formula. I have added 2 drops of unfiltered applecider vinegar and a drop of vitamin A D to the formula. after I post this I am going to the store to get a bottle of pedialyte to use instead of water to mix the formula. The formula I am using is Kaytee exact. It's crop never completely empties so I gently massage it every hour.

*edit* I forgot to add I give a very thin mixture. I've got to go get my pedialyte now. :crying:  :sadblue:

And by the way, I just took this picture moments ago, and of course got pooped on. Anyway, this baby hatched September 23, 2009.

I can't type any more. I'm sooo crushed. In fact I separated the parents hoping they will bond with some of my other tiels In hopes of having better luck with future clutches.

thanks Phil. I just got back with Pedialyte, a tiny jar of beechnut baby food squash, and two cartons of beechnut baby cereal. one is whole grain multi grain with apples and yogurt, the other is Whole grain brown rice with bananas and rasberries.

I was going to put a pinch of each into my next tiny formula mix.

Oh I'm keeping my hen separate from everybody right now. I think she could use a few months vacation!

So sorry, Jo.. :sadblue:

I really hope that the little guy is a fighter. I know you'll do whatever it takes too. I had never heard of slow crop before (I suppose that's because I've never had any baby chicks). Even though I've had different Parrot-type birds for almost 20 years, I'm still learning new things.

I've been trying to avoid hand feeding my babies and just play with them while the parents raise them. I get too attached while handfeeding. I was reading through a handfeeding book yesterday and there are a bunch of crop disorders. Sour crop, crop stasis, slow crop, another one caused by over filling where the crop stretches and needs to be held with a harness, and I hope I never encounter this one... Missing crop, where tha baby is born with no crop at all!!!!

Well I've come to the conclusion we have a sour crop and draining it is not as easy as the book says!!!! I fed a little warm pedialyte, massaged the crop and then used my dropper to syphon the contents back out. it has to be done slow so the lining doesn't get damaged. after about 20 minutes of rinsing with warm pedialyte and syphoning, I got most of the sour food out. I then just fed the baby more warm pedialyte. I'm more concerned about dehydration at this point because it seems he absorbs all the fluid, then the food just sits.

Oh my does he shiver!!!! I'm so ready to see if I can find a tiny sock somewhere to make a sweater for him!!! I doubt I have any... my human baby is 10 yrs old!!

Hopefully I can get through to the vet tomorrow.... Columbus day..... *sigh*

I was wondering why you were still up at this hour, since it is about 3:30am there. I sure hope the little guy makes it.I'm sure I would be in a panic myself, since I've never done any hand feeding.
