Just got back from the vet with Summer. She has a little birdie cast on her left leg right now. She somehow managed to break her leg (saw the x-ray and it's a break). Needless to say, she's not a very happy bird. She's still a little doped-up from the anesthesia they gave her when they put the cast on. Plus, they gave me 10 days worth of an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever/relaxant. Very nice clinic too (first time I've used them). I'll have to get a few pics once she's a little less unhappy about the whole ordeal. This has been a bad month for me. Addition: If anyone has any ideas on how to get her from trying to chew the 'cast' off, let me know. She just won't leave the darn thing alone. Edited by conure58, Oct 30 2009, 04:34 AM.

The vet said it should take about 6 weeks before he could take the cast off. It's not a plaster cast, like people usually have when they break a bone. It's more like a tongue depressor fitted and wrapped with surgical tape. She won't stop chewing the tape. Since I had to keep the costs down, that's probably why they didn't used plaster (I think they can use plaster on birds, but I'm not sure). I guess I can try to wrap more tape around her leg, since I've got lots of rolls of surgical tape here. She is scheduled to see the vet in 4 weeks to make sure it's healing correctly, but I may have to go in sooner if she ends up chewing the whole thing off. It looks very uncomfortable on her, so I can understand why she wants to get it off. |

Poor little bird. Hope u feel better soon Summer ![]() Something to put on.. Hmm Is there anything that she dosent like that lay a thin lay on? Trying to find the right english word for it. Smear? What about Pluck no more as they use that on the feathers for them not to pluck/bite themself. No idea if that would work but. |

Don''t know about 'Pluck No More'.. Did a little reading online about it and it's got mixed reviews. I added some tape around where she was chewing on it the most. She seems to be chewing it less this morning, so hopefully she's getting used to it (the 'cast'). I think Kahn realizes something's wrong with her too (besides the obvious tape, etc.). He's actually been preening her a bit without biting (first time ever). She doesn't seem to mind either. I wonder if he feels sorry for her..?? |

I tried to use Pluck No More on my tiels cause the guy was draging out her feathers in the start but it dident work on those. I also tried it on the baby's cause the father was plucking off their mohawks and that worked very well. |

Hey Mark , So sorry to hear about poor little Summer's leg , that is bad news . I wonder how she did it ? I wonder if maybe she was playing and got her leg stuck , and kind of pulled it free . I can imagine why she is chewing the tape , i am sure it is probably itchy as heck on her , and driving her crazy . I am not sure myself if they can use plaster casts on birds , but i bet they can . I hope you can alleviate the chewing, so she doesnt chew the cast free . I wish Summer a speedy and healthy recovery !

She's not chewing on it as much now, so maybe she's getting used to it (or she's finding out it's not going to come off). She's able to get around in her cage pretty well, which is good. She's eating and drinking fine. The vet thinks she'll be fine in a few weeks. She already seems to be able to grip a little better with her left foot. I had never seen an actual x-ray of a bird before yesterday. Pretty neat looking thing (except for the break in her leg). |

I just gave her the nightly medicine she's taking and took a couple pictures. They're a little blurry, but you can kind of see her 'cast'. |
