Hey guys its me Sofia. I just went and got the most gorgeous little green cheek conure. He is my first bird but I do somtimes take care of my uncles african grey. I am soo excited to have him! My parents actually let me stay home from school to pic him out from the breeder. He's very outgoing but a little nippy. I'm not sure what to name him yet but even though I don't know for sure I feel like he's a boy. He's only about 9 mos. old so still a baby and he has really nice feathers and coloring. He's very red on his belly. He's also un-flighted which I really like, it's nice to see him flutter about the cage Arghh I love him already! |

Congrats Sofia!! Have you decided on a name (and do you know for sure what sex 'he' is)? I just realized from your IP address that we're practically neighbors. Does Pflugerville ring any bells? Oh, and we need some of your new baby!!

No he wasn't sexed, only the pinnaples were sexed but idk, he seems more like a guy to me... Yes it does! And I plan to take pictures as soon as my camera is charged. Also I'm not sure if I'm supposed to take him out yet... I know you are supposed to allow time to get used to the environment but he just wants to play! |

Congratulations on your new little boy :), pic's please we would love to see him. Some conures adjust really quickly to the re new surrounding others take abit longer, I know when i got Kermit he was out playing on the 2nd day after i got him.If you think he has settled in ok take him out for a play, but if he seems a bit nervious and scared just wait a bit longer, but it sounds like he is settling well. I am sure you will have many happy hour together. |

I can tell you when I first got mine, they were out pretty much right away. I guess it depends on the bird. Some birds don't want to be out (scared of a new place, etc.) and others aren't so scared. I think he'll let you know if he'd rather stay in his cage. If you open the door and he comes out, I'd say that's fine. Play with him. He sounds like that's what he wants. |

Haha yes he jumped right out. I've started clicker training, just letting him know that the click is a good sound and stuff. He's really sweet and lets me pet him but he is quite the biter. I don't think he's scared or anything though, he flies to me but when he sees bare skin he likes to take a hard little nip at it, even if its the arm he flew to. How can I discourage this without frightening him? He'll just walk up to me and bite

Congrats on your new GCC Sofia ! Clicker training is a great idea , i just started with mine . As for the biting , you can try blowing in the face of the bird . Also use the " No " command in a firm voice . ( That shouldnt scare him , but hopefully discourage the biting ) . Have fun with your new feathered friend . |

Thanks guys. I tried doing things like that earlier but only suceeded in making him more angry and bite more. If I put him down and walk away he follows and flies to me so im sure he doesn't want me to just leave him alone, I don't believe Im provoking him in any way at all. I've just put him away with a little treat and covered his cage. Maybe he's tired after his long day? He was from san antonio so he was in the breeders car for awhile. I just hope I haven't scared him or made him not like me

Give him a little adjustment period , and the biting will probably lessen . I am sure you havent scared him , and i am sure he completely likes you ! My Dusky conure use to be very nippy , and would bite down very hard . With a little training , and lots of love he has calmed down a lot . He still occasionaly bites hard when he wants to let me know he doesnt like something though . |
