Conure Crazed!!!!!!!!!

Just had a woman bring her cockatiel into the petstore about a week or so ago..... covered in blood. She was clipping the wings.... and clipped a wing... LITERALLY. and wanted to know if my mom could fix it. She said she always clipped the feathers herself and never had any problems. My mother got the blood stopped with the use of a lot of quik stop and pressure. The woman asked if the bird would live. My mother looked her right in the face and said "look, You took the end of her wing off, she's lost a lot of blood, she's in shock. I am not going to stand here and tell you if she will live or not." I think I would have said something else and not been so polite. oh yeah... and WHY come to a pet store for a medical emergency?????????????? EDUCATION To give you and idea, straighten out an arm. turn your arm so the thumb is slightly up and fingers are together. a bird's wing is like your arm. when a bird folds it's wings, the top part you may think is the shoulder, is actually the wrist, the "fingers" are pointed downward and the flight feathers are connected to the fingers. Now put your arm at your side, bring your hand up to your shoulder and bend your wrist so your hand curls down in front of your arm pit and your fingers point downward. If any of you are ever lucky enough to examine a baby bird's wing, you'll see what I mean and that there is also what appears to be a thumb at the wrist joint. The customer cut her cockatiel's wing off at the wrist. If you want your bird's feather's clipped, either take it to a veterinarian or someone who is experienced in grooming birds. Otherwise Leave well enough alone!!!! I am a firm believer in wing trimming if the bird is going to spend a lot of time out of the cage in a safe environment. I feel it helps with taming and training. not all of my birds are clipped because not all of my birds are handled. I do my own clipping when needed and I have 20 years experience at it too. |

Wow , i cant believe people would hurt their bird (mistakingly) then bring it to the pet store for a medical emergency . The bird could have died from loss of blood . If i ever chose to get my birds wings clipped , i would get it done from my avain vet . |

Some people just shouldn't have birds. How she could have clipped the feathers so short as to actually cut into the wing is beyond me. And then to bring him into a pet store instead of a vet is mind boggling too. I've clipped lots of wings in almost 20 years too. It's pretty easy once you've seen it done by a pro and had them watch you do it, to make sure you're doing it correctly. I don't think this woman knows what she's doing. I sure hope the little guy is alright too.. |

Poor birdie!!! I wouldn't dream of trying to clip my birds wings myself!! Or beak trim, or claw trim...I am new to keeping birds and feel that I am too inexperienced. I would be too scared I would hurt the poor thing--Vets are much better and would rather do maintenance on a healthy bird than emergency care due to negligence!! My vet only charges the maintenance fee of $16 if you are only getting clipped or trimmed. She made sure she had the time to answer my questions when I got my first bird from Petco, showing me that she was too thin and making sure I knew the proper foods to feed my little macaw. Her staff is wonderful and very patient, answering any questions I have in a timely manner. Leave clipping and trimming to the trained professionals--your bird and vet will thank you! |

It just makes you wonder how many bad bird owners are out there ! ( Hopefully not too many ) . Imagine people that have mistakingly killed their birds that way . ( Like bleeding to death from the injury they caused ) .

That's what happened to one of my mom's cockatiels. We got Benji from a woman who cut her wings off at the wrist, just figuring she could clip her birds wings like she clipped her dog's nails. Poor Benji has to live watching all three other birds soar around the house, while she can't flap her wings unless she wants to cut through her skin with the jagged piece of bone the woman left her with. But, we've got her now.. we've had her for years, she's just fine other than that handycap. What happened with that bird? did you give him back to the woman? |

I was off that day. and yes my mother handed the bird back. We have not gotten an update either. I think I would have told her I would keep it myself overnight for observation, took it to the vet myself and then told the woman it died and then kept it for myself. (I also probably would not have been very polite about her responsibilities as a bird owner) |
