Max is starting to talk!!

The lady I got him from said that he did speak but the only word he had said that she could make out was d**n! On his first full day in his new home I haven't heard that one, but he has whistled, said "hello" and "c'mere".
Anybody have any idea how big a vocabulary conures can build? I am so excited, and am hoping he will influence my little macaw a bit and maybe she will start making sounds besides the hilarious chattering she does in the afternoon and evening!! Is it a good sign that he is talking? I am really hoping he will adjust to his new home and come to accept and even possibly rebond to me. Any idea what it could mean when he is dancing in his cage, grabbing my finger with his foot and then rubbing his beak and head against it instead of biting me silly like he has been? I refuse to pull back when he bites--his beak is so long I just grab it gently and hold it while he chomps down, telling him "no bite!" until he lets go and allows me to give him loves, all the while I speak gently to him.

Thank you everybody!! I have loved exploring the site!!

It sounds like max is already staring to bond with he seems to love you already.
As for talking, Kermit never shuts up from morning until night, he picks up whatever i say to him within minutes.
I had to stop using blowing in his face method to stop him biting ,because he copied me, he has even copied sneezing and laughing and now he has copied coronation street theme. :D

Some conures can develop decent little vocabularies . Some may only say a few words , and others ( Like Blue Crowned ) may say hundreds of words . I guess it all depends on the bird .

Glad to hear Max has said a couple words . Try repeating some words to him , and see if you can further his vocabulary :)

I truly hope he does bond to me...I am going through a divorce and have wanted a bird for close to 20 years--soon to be ex hubby hated birds. He only got me Eva cuz he thought it would make me stay. Oddly enough, she seemed to prefer him over me even though I was the one that cared for her (he would ply her with nuts and treats and she is right next to the computer where he spent most of his time) and he is trying for her in the divorce even though I don't believe he has any way of caring for her and I firmly believe he will eat her!! She is my little nut-head and I love her to pieces and am going to see if the animal behaviorist in my town can trade her work with my volunteer time helping her with her rescued wild and domestic birds. My new conure has been a blessing and the kids and I all love him.
I am trying to encourage him to talk by repeating to him what he says and I mimic his whistle back to him--that seems to be the thing that got him going with his speaking yesterday. Plus I think he was scolding me cuz I had his cage door open with my hands inside trying to get him to step up while he turned my hand into hamburger!!! lol. I think he understands that I love him though, he is very sweet once he gets past the biting, and is spending time at the front of his cage as I am next to it working at my desk. He has started making small noises and sometimes very shrill (oh! my ear!) and is starting to just touch my hand with his beak when I reach in to give him loves. I am very happy with him!!

It sounds like he just wants to be with you all the time, this means he must love you, i would not worry about the cage thing, Kermit will not let me put my hand in his cage, it is his territory and he attacks like mad when i try to.
kermit sits at the front of his cage, so he can see me all the time and if he can see me he is happy sounds like Max is the same just wanting to be with you, he sounds like he is a little darling.

Max has said bye-bye now. My babysitter heard him while I was at school. His official vocabulary is hello, bye bye, and c'mere. He also does the come here whistle used by many dog owners. The pet shop people said they heard him say d@##!t but I haven't been witness to that one yet.

I wonder how long until I learn how many words he does say? Meanwhile I will encourage him to talk more. He is so funny when he whistles or says something and I do it back to him. He almost seems surprised! :giggle:

That is Awesome !

The more you stand in front of him and repeat words to him , the more his vocabulary will grow . Just dont try to make him learn too many words at once , because he could get confused . Keep trying 1 word a day until he repeats it regularly . If he doesnt learn the word , try it everyday until he does .... then move to the next one .

This is how i taught my Sun conure to repeat the 5 or 6 words she knows right now . If i spent more time teaching her , i am sure she could learn them .

Thanks, I had been wondering how to go about helping him expand his vocabulary! I tell him every day that he is a pretty bird and I tell him his name--I am hoping for a repeat one of these days! He is so funny. I wouldn't trade my birdies for the world. Someday I hope to have an aviary of my own and rescue the poor things (no breeding though). I know that there are many wonderful birds out there that need a chance and a home!
