John Sandoval approached the front door of the Bibliothèque Nationale cautiously. He had never seen such a building. The four large L-shaped towers surrounded him, to the point that he could no longer see the city beyond them. And they were all bustling with activity, even at this late hour; John had never been to a library so rich with the scent of Kine.

He entered the south-easternmost building, the location of the Tremere chantry. He moved quietly among the hallways and books until he came to an isolated area. The large room was mostly cut off from the rest, with a ghoul standing by the entrance. There were many long, tall shelves of books, containing more volumes than John could count. There were public work stations throughout the room, and private, detached study rooms and offices along the walls. John even spotted a locked storage room near the librarian desk, containing a variety of occult objects - no doubt for rituals. John had never been to such a fascinating place.

John Sandoval had made arrangements to meet a fellow Tremere at the chantry in a few minutes. The only description his contacts in the Camarilla Network gave him were that she had a young appearance, but was mich older than he. In all his life and unlife, John had only ever met one other Tremere, and that was his sire. As a result, he had no idea what to expect. But, rather than fret, John grabbed a random book from the Path of Conjuring rack and sat down at one of the public workstations and began to take notes.

She hoped out of the taxi making use of her heavily accented French to assure the driver that she would be fine and that she was meeting her papa inside. Her appearance was tiresome at this time of night and was one of the reasons she often found a companion in the annuls of the beloved Tremere so that she was escorted by someone with the appearance of a parent or relation. She straightened the smooth deep blue velvet of her dress coat. It fell to just below her knees, hiding the pretty pale blue party dress she had chosen for her meeting, her patent black shoes with their delicate flower buckles and white tights finished the outfit. Her hair was loose but for two of the long curls either side of her face twisted and clipped at the back holding the long tumble from her face.

She walked through the mortal's library quickly not paying attention to the studious creatures, their noses buried in books equally ignoring the small child that walked through to the lesser travelled reference text section. The doorway within this was hidden to a mortal's eye and so she passed though into the disguised corridor offering a cursory nod to the ghouls that stood either side. She glanced at her Winnie the Pooh watch seeing that she was perfectly on time she smiled.

He had contacted her by e-mail, a novel method that she was still getting used to. She still prefered paper and pen, books and the smell they emitted. As she turned the corner into the large room filled with towering book cases she spotted the man she was due to meet instantly. The room was surprisingly deserted for such a time of night making her feel that her footsteps echoed that bit more without the distraction of rustling papers and movement to detract from it.

She walked to him with a soft smile on her face. "Mr Sandoval? My name is Bethany Schauenberg... A pleasure to meet you." She offered a small kidd gloved hand to him as she waited to be offered a seat and their meeting commence. It was nice to have been searched out, nice to know that there was the potential for kindred companionship within their clan though she had no illusions that there was no doubt something ulterior within this meeting and so first it was up to her to discern it.

"The pleasure is all mine, Ms. Schauenberg," replied John. He stood up and faced Bethany. He took her petite, gloved hand in his, shaking it gentily, looking her in the eye. He realized immediately from her eyes that underneath her child-like exterior belied a wise warlock - one who could teach him a great many things. He knew not to underestimate her, but also to give her the respect he would any teacher. "Please, call me John."

"You're probably wondering why I e-mailed you," John continued. "The truth is I'm not too familiar with Tremere customs in this city. Back in Ottawa, it was just my sire and I. The Pyramid had little sway over how we managed from day to day."

John closed the book he was studying, folded his notes, and put them in his pants pocket. He would continue that bit of studying later. "So I need to know how to continue my studies, ideally with a bit of guidance when needed and as little interference as possible. Is there a higher group of Tremere in the city I need to answer to? Or will I need a specific Master? This is all new to me."

He shifted his weight onto his left left and put his hand on the desk, waiting for Bethany to act. He daren't sit back down or start walking. Like it or not, she was the stronger Tremere, and if he wanted to learn anything in this city, he had to follow her lead.

She smiled sweetly and took a seat at the table he had retained before she arrived. It was clear to her now that he was new to the dark world of Tremere and that this meeting was not sourcing equals within the city but an advisor of a higher ranking. Something that felt strange to her, though she was learned her physical age meant often she was looked down upon. It had been a difficult choice her sire had made when he had rescued her those decades prior and though the council had approved it the ramifications were long felt especially outside of their beloved clan. It made her even more fiercely loyal and fiercely suspicious of all outsiders.

"Well John for a start please call me Beth. I am but of the fourth rank, young in some way like yourself. I am happy to help in any way that I can." She crossed her hands lightly in her lap, tilting her head to observe him as she spoke. "The library in the most part is available for your perusal. There are some areas that are warded in such a way that you will not gain access, I wouldn't recommend attempting to either. An elder warlock placed them there some years ago I have been told before his departure from the city and only one of similar standing will be able to gain access."

She pursed her lips as she thought of the numbers within the city and then looked at John again. "I am afraid that the Tremere Regent is away from the city and I am uncertain when he will return, besides you there is only me within the library for good reason. The other warlocks I knew of within the city have been called to council, something about the Prince of Paris but I am not of rank to know the details."

Smiling she sat looking impassively. "So what is it that you currently study? Perhaps I can be of assistance in a more direct way....for company in these vast anuls is much appreciated."

John thought about his current situation. At last, someone else in the city who might help him. He certainly wasn't getting the help of an Elder Warlock along with the benefit of hundreds of years of experience, but he supposed the assistance of a Kindred of similar standing meant that he would not have to deal with the consequences of a debt to an elder. Receiving help from an elder would undoubtedly mean that they would demand services of him at best, or use him as a pawn at worst, for their schemes. At least he did not anticipate such demands from an equal.

Still, he though, Beth must be hiding some sort of agenda. Even if she wasn't strong enough to use him or fight him with any degree of success, surely she must have some sort of ulterior plan or motive to further her own interests.

I need her help, he confirmed to himself, but I must be cautious. Don't turn your back.

"I'm currently working on the Path of Conjuring," he said. "I can permanently summon an object, but I can't summon anything complex. For some reaspn, any complex devices get summoned as their individual simple components." He chuckled to himself for a moment. "I tried summoning a handgun a few weeks ago, but it came forth as separate pieces. A trigger, a barrel, a spring, a firing pin, a small sheath of rubber to coat the handle. Completely unassembled and useless."

John smiled at his new companion. "Maybe I should just start smaller? Something less complex, like a switchblade? What do you think?"

What was the obsession with weaponry that all around her had? She could not fathom it, though she was certain that the young felt they had need of this sort of thing. Perhaps it was more her task to show him that the only weapon he truly needed were the sorcerers arts at his fingertips. He was sitting in one of the most resplendent Tremere libraries outside of the Inner Council and barring the rooms locked from those of lower rank there was enough to keep them both occupied for decades without even exiting the building.

First things first she moved the chair out before her without lifting a finger. A simple act for her, where given the necessity she could control enough force to halt a bus in its tyre burning tracks. She gestured to it and waited before she finally spoke. “John I am not truly familiar with the path you speak of but if it is weaponry that you feel the need to create then yes you need to begin with the simple forms, the folding sheet of paper, a glass to drink from and yes even a blade to use.” She could not help but sigh lightly. “I was taught paths more suited to my frame and being, ones that will hold me in better stead to defend and utilise the sorcery we have available to us. Unlike any other creature we are blessed with such gifts.”

“This library is here for you to use and when the Regent returns I am certain he will assign an apprentice capable and willing to teach you properly. What do you know of the city so far?” She smiled softly. “Have you met the Prince yet?”

John was agape at how easily Beth moved the chair. His sire was an excellent thaumaturge, but never explored any paths such as Movement of the Mind. He knew such things as telekinesis were possible, after all that was his purpose in the city was to learn them, but he had never witnessed it. After a moment, he realized his jaw was dropped and quickly regained his composure.

"I have, actually," replied John, answering her question. He thought back on his first night in the city, and the Prince's club. He smiled at the memory of his first local prey. He always thought that his Québécoise prey tasted somehow better, and was happy that he learned that his first Parisienne was similarly pleasant. "I stopped by his club when I first arrived in the city. It was the Prince who directed me to you, in fact."

It was then that John realized that perhaps he was going about things in the incorrect order. He had a basic idea about Conjuring. He knew that with a little bit more work he could summon more complex items. He also knew the basics of the Path of Blood. But maybe he should think of other paths first. Maybe his plan of mastering one path was ill-conceived, and he should instead embrace many teachings, mastering later the ones that suited him.

"Please," he said, "show me what you know. Maybe I have been considering things the wrong way." He smiled in spite of himself. "You must think me terribly impatient. Restless. Young. But until the Regent comes back there's little I can do but read and practise and wait. Instead, let's work together. I'm sure I could teach you the basics of Conjuring and Blood. And also I'm sure there are other things I could do for you to repay you for your time. Just name it."

John realized after saying that last sentence that he may have just prepared himself for bad things to come. It was possible that he just gave Beth leave to manipulate him as she saw fit. But she was his senior, and that meant that he would be someone's pawn in the great scheme of things; better someone who could teach him too.

Before Beth could reply, John stood up from his chair. "I am famished!" he said. "Care to join me for a quick bite? I'm sure there's a good spot to hunt not too far."

His proposal was an interesting one, suddenly presented to her and most unexpected for she had little time for others except when in the company of her mentor and sire. She opened her mouth to speak but before she was able to he stood allowing her some needed time to consider such a request. He had opened himself up to a boon of an extreme nature, after all the paths her sire had taught her breaking from the traditions of the path of blood and other such common skills meant that it was in demand, it was coveted. To throw such knowledge to someone so young would take thought, his offer to teach her the paths neglected in her own education as tempting but not something she could not find with ease in the annuls of the chantry.

She would answer him later, she needed to think about this because what he was asking and what he was offering was certainly not an even deal so to speak. So she stood with a smile for, like him, she had not fed instead more interested in making the appointment on time. His offer to hunt with her amused her however as her hunting methods were somewhat unorthadox so it would be interesting, however having an adult figure for company prevented the questioning looks and would certainly make her life easier.

"But of course John. We shall explore the city together." she did not elaborate if the of course was to his offer or to the hunting, she would leave that to his mind and see if he would push it. "lead on and let us see what the night will offer us." She smiled slipping her kidd gloved hand into his. The comfortable sight of father and daughter for his colouring would allow such an assumption she had no doubt.

Ah companionship, the thing she had craved since leaving Munich and Willhelm...she had to question the price and also what she would truly gain from it but for now she would appreciate it for what it was; the return to a little sliver of peace.
