One February 14, 2003, a group of high ranking Iraqi generals, fearing the disastrous effects of U:S. invasion stage a coup. They know that Sadam as a sentimental guy would be distracted at big party for his family. The succeed in killing their President and his sons. The new junta is composed of Sunni Baathists, but they extend the hand of friendship to the world community and invite weapons inspectors. What would the last half of a decade have brought to Iraq ? |

Some of this depends on how internal relations go, who these folks are that orchestrate the coup, and how they lead the country. |

My guess is the US will then give the ruling junta the same offer they gave Hussein (minus the Hussein has to leave Iraq thingie). I think the other big term was to open the whole country up to weapon inspections. If these guys kill Hussein to halt a war, I suspect they would go for this. |

There is an urban legend/conspiracy theory that says Saddam Hussein died of throat cancer in 1997, I know not to trust such theories, but I think it marks a good jumping off point for AH. That is to say what if Saddam did die in 1997 of throat cancer or other natural causes, and the military not wanting another long brutal reign of yet another Hussein, took quick action against his sons, and established a new military dictatorship to replace the Hussein regime, essentially the scenario Paul has but much sooner. |

I wonder how the Clinton adminstration would react to it though. |

Silvious asks two very interesting questions. What would have happened if Saadam had died in 1997 and what would the Clinton administration have done about it? The answer to both of those questions depends on who takes over. In my scenario, we know who tales over. People who want to avoid being invaded. We can assume since they were generals in the Iraqi army they do naot erspect the ideas of democracy or human rights |

In my scenario the same people as in yours take over, because they don't want another long regime, and they see his death as an opening. PS Sorry about the hijack |

Getting back to my scenario, since there was no Iraq war, how was the U.S. politics different? |

In 2003 the generals (regardless of their inclinations) are going to be acting under significant pressure. Theyre likely to give the Coalition Of the Willing significant concessions. Not to say theyll turn Iraq into a Jeffersonian Democracy. But at the least, they would let the WMD issue be resolved with no drama. Theyd likely turn Iraq into a fairly responsible regional entity. In 1997 this wont be the case. I bet theyd just fight among each other until a new strongman emerges. |

Well, I think the democratic party isn't ascendent. You might see a invasion of Iran in 2006-2007. ps. I am going to post my death of saddam hussein idea in a new thread. |

Once again, just as I was preoccupied how the Spanish Morrocan War would effect Bushes´ Iraq adventure, I am still the provincial gringo. How does the lack of an Iraq war effect U. S. politics? Does Bush get reelected. |

Bush gets reelected, possibly by a wider margin than in our TL. |

Bush would still have invaded. He wanted the oil, and would have found an excuse, just as in real life. Nothing changes, except there's no Saddam to topple, capture, try and execute. |

 Even if that was a motivation, oil could be acquired from the new regime, Michael. |
