When I attended Skate for Hope last year, I saw something astonishing. Quite a number of fans brought flowers to the event. Yes, actual bouquets. Just prior to the doors opening, a couple of ushers came by and said that they would take all of the flowers from the audience members and give them to the skaters (presumably so the fans wouldn't throw the flowers onto the ice during the show). Has anyone here actually done this? Actually given flowers to a skater, I mean. Isn't it kind of an exercise in futility? After all, the skater won't know the person who gave her the flowers from Adam. All she will have is a card. I mean, sure, I suppose it's a nice gesture and all, but it just seems odd to me, because the fans don't actually bring the flowers to the skaters, and the skaters don't know the people whose names are on the card. I'm not decrying the practice. It seems kind of sweet. But it just seems a bit...futile, no? |
