Emily's Twitter page

Posted by kioewen (Members) at Jun 5 2009, 04:30 PM. 4 comments

Did everyone know that Emily has a Twitter page? I didn't, until I read the info on her official site.

Here's Emily's Twitter link:

Amazingly, Emily is now apparently in Toronto "to work on a new short," with someone named "David."

going to Toronto to work on a new short

I assume this means a new short program? How wonderful!

I wonder where Emily might be practicing all of this? Toronto is just an hour's drive away from where I am. It would be a privilege to catch a glimpse of Emily in practice, if her practice sessions are public. (I have no idea if they would be.)

I hope she might do some media (TV interview?) while in Toronto. If she does, and if I know about it before it airs, I could record it and YouTube it.

At any rate, I hope she has a great experience here in Canada. We love Emily in the Great White North!

Emily in "On Harvard Time" show (with news!)

On Harvard Time is apparently a humour-oriented program put up by the students at Harvard. Their latest episode features a wonderful clip of the host getting a skating lesson from Emily. Even in warm-ups, she looks so beautiful, and she's witty and charming too. No other skater comes close to being so natural and charismatic in front of the camera:

Emily's segment lasts from 1:13 to 3:52. The poor host tries so hard to get Emily to go out with him (who can blame him?). It's a really enjoyable bit.

But the segment contains some news as well. Apparently, Emily will be taking a year off school to focus on skating!

Whatever happens, it will just be such a pleasure to see her on the ice more often. And it was delightful to see her in this clip.

Skate for Hope 2009

I do hope that I'll be able to make it to this year's Skate for Hope show. I enjoyed last year's immensely, especially because I got an Emily autograph.

Here's this year's poster, as shown on Emily's official site:

Tickets, as they say, "are on sale now." :)

Has Emily maxed out her potential?

Okay. This is an attempt to jump start the board a little bit. There was a link to an article in the 2010 Olympics prediction thread where the author believed Emily had gone as far as she could and given time off/school schedule and injuries would not be able to ever be a national champion or step onto a podium in the Olympics. My question is: Do you agree with that notion? For a while, I didn't think I agreed with it...but now it seems less and less likely that Em will be able reach that next level. I'd love for that feeling to be wrong.

Thoughts?

Emily -- Interview from IceChips 2009

This is nice to see. An article at icenetwork.com includes several fascinating comments from Emily. She talks about her injury, her current plans, and...well, read for yourself:

Emily told us that she was off the ice for a month and a half with the injury that forced her to withdraw from the 2009 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

"I sprained my ankle really badly less than a week before I was supposed to leave for nationals. I was getting cortisone shots, and it just didn't really help at all. I got back on the ice a little bit in March. I'm feeling a lot better; my ankle is pretty much healed. I do a lot of physical therapy.

"I've been skating at the Skating Club of Boston. I'm on the ice four or five days a week -- just getting back into it, doing show programs, getting ready for summer training when I get back from school. I'm excited to go home and start training with Bonnie."

The big question, of course, is whether Emily plans to continue competing, at the same time that she is a full-time student at Harvard.

"I definitely still want to compete, and that's what's driving me. There's nothing quite like the adrenaline of competing, and the emotion and excitement, and especially the crowd. Spokane is an amazing city. I loved the nationals I had there last time. I know I have to go through two qualifying competitions first, but you start from the bottom and go to the top!"

Emily is majoring (they call it 'concentrating' at Harvard) in Sociology and Government.

"And I'm actually taking a science class," she said excitedly. "It's called The Energetic Universe; it's kind of astronomy and physics. I opened the textbook, and I see a picture, and I'm like, 'Oh, it's a skater! That dress looks kind of familiar!' And yes, I'm in the textbook."

The professor asked Emily to help him with a spinning demonstration in the lecture hall in front of 200 students. He put her on a spinner and gave her weights and then picked up a helmet.

"I was like, 'I don't really need a helmet!'" she said, laughing. "It had a flashlight duct-taped on top, and he turned the lights down and had me spin so the light went around. It was pretty funny."

How interesting to hear that a picture of Emily was in the same textbook that she was learning from!

And yes, she plans to continue competing. I like her best in exhibitions, but frankly, anything that finds her on the ice, skating before the public more often, is a good thing.
