It's fascinating to see how often Emily is cited as a favourite performer by individuals who don't necessarily following figure skating religiously, or who are only recently becoming interested by it. She seems to be a great "convert maker" -- someone who entices potential fans. Here's one such post that I recently stumbled across, on a forum for an Irish singing group named "Celtic Woman," which has previously performed at figure-skating events (e.g., last year's "Skate for the Heart" show): http://celticwomanforum.com/index.php?topic=5301.0 Very enthusiastic words about Emily's look and talent. There are many similar blog posts and forum chats online, at the most diverse locations. |

Sure thing. Here's a very appreciative post about Emily at a forum that I really like, and lurk at, called "The Judgment of Paris." It's a size-acceptance forum devoted to combating the anorexic ideal that is imposed on women by the fashion industry. As a counter to this underweight standard, it celebrates the work of plus-size fashion models, and features Classical works of art to show that the ideal of feminine beauty was, in the past, curvier and more natural. The forum celebrated Emily as an antidote to the similarly underweight appearance of many figure skaters, and praised her for providing a refreshing alternative, as a skater with a visibly healthier figure: http://www.judgmentofparis.com/board/showthread.php?t=1384 The site gets a good amount of traffic (the Emily post has over 1,000 hits), so it could well bring in some new fans to figure skating, and create some Emily appreciation. |

Wow! Emily is sort of a poster person for the Plus size supporters. Good for her. |

Yes, but I think they're indulging in a bit of wishful thinking, because really, having seen Emily perform live, there's no doubt about the fact that she is very slim. I saw only a slight, barely perceptible difference between her and any of the other skaters performing at Skate for Hope, and it's all to Emily's advantage. She's much healthier-looking than other figure skaters, but still very thin. Actually, more notable was the fact that she is a bit taller than the other female skaters. That too works to her advantage, I think, as it gives her greater presence on the ice, and a more striking silhouette. As soon as she skated onto the ice, even before she was introduced, there was no question that it was her. The mood in the audience was electric. |
