correct & complete article posted fanofgold 12-26-06 EMILY HUGHES: The Year in Review Most fans of Emily Hughes became fans this year. She was known by few outside the skating world. I first saw Emily on tv during the spring of 2005. She was a spunky, fiery 'little' skater. I thought she was 5'1" or 5'2". I think she actually was around 5'3" at that time. Anyway I thought [hereafter 'thot'] she had potential to be a good skater. But she was already quite good and surprised me. Dec. 2005 brought her to TV again for the MARSHALL's event and while she skated well, she received few votes, mainly because she was an unknown quantity by skate fans and the public. She skated well and I was very surprised at how she had developed skate-wise and in growth. She must've grown a couple of inches and her skating was very strong. I was very IMPRESSED. Also I was amazed at how 'big' that is how tall and strong she looked next to the other skaters. EMILY is bigger and stronger than Kwan, Meissner, Cohen, and others. [She is now 5-5 or 5-6 or more!] If she channeled that strength in her jumps she could be another strong jumper like MIDORI ITO or HARDING, or so I thot. Emily has powerful legs and she should be a great jumper. So I felt that Emily had a chance at a Top 5 or 6 at Nationals. NATIONALS Emily surprised just about everybody and was second behind Cohen after the short. Emily fell on her long program and Meissner just edged her for second. CONTROVERSY Because M. KWAN didn't compete and Kwan was the top US hope, Emily was made an alternate. It would be KWAN, COHEN, and MEISSNER, with EH as a backup for the Olympic team. It was even thot that she wouldn't even go to Turin [Torino] except in an emergency. Kwan skated before a committee and they selected her to replace Emily. MY PREDICTION [The Feeling] On the USFSA board I wrote that somehow Emily would not just go to Turin but actually COMPETE and SKATE and even felt she would do well. This was in late January and Emily wasn't even on the team per se nor expected to comptete. I heard she wouldn't even travel to Turin and if she did her family would have to pay their own way. Emily of course was disappointed but she was ever so gracious and classy even though of course she was disappointed. Who wouldn't be! THE CALL While out with her family at a sushi restaurant, Emily Hughes received the call to replace Kwan after she announced she still felt injured. All of a sudden Emily was thrust into the fore of media attention and more. Some placed pressure on her expecting her to surprise us as her sister Sarah had in 2002. I was so happy for Emily I couldn't contain it. As sweet and nice as Sarah Hughes was or seemed, there was something EXCEPTIONAL about Emily. Her persona was one of grace, fun, innocence, wonder, and joy and she was something special...or should I say someone special. She deserved the best and I was very happy for her. THE DREAM and the OLYMPIC SHORT The morning of the Olympic Short Program I awoke in a daze...I came out of the haze of a dream?, no NOT a dream but a vision, a FLASHBACK of my youth. I had gone back in time to when I was about 12 years of age. I recall I was being told various things by my sisters and brother. Some were predictions? and I thot these were stupid [back then]. I recall I was reading one of my Dad's poetry books, and reading short poems by EMILY DICKINSON. What was all this about?!? What a weird thing. In Torino Emily skated well as did others. It even seemed Emily had a shot at a medal!! Wow this was exciting. I wished her and all the US skaters well. After various Olympic controversies in speed skating and skiing it was good to see the soul of Olympic sports--ice skating. EH did well in her short program and her smile was golden. THE LONG PROGRAM I thot Emily skated well in spite of the missed jumps. I personally placed her in 4th overall. If she hadn't fallen I think that she had a chance at the Bronze. Anyway Emily impressed many not just with her skating but with her SMARTS. None other than Tom Brokaw was impressed at her maturity and intellect! Emily really is quite a young lady. JOY into my life Emily's joy for skating AND life gave me a spark during a difficult period in my life. I searched for that book I was reading in that dream/vision and found it, as it had been packed away many years ago. Later I heard that Emily was supposedly named for the poet Emily Dickinson! Wow is all that a strange coincidence... WORLDS and beyond... Emily went to Worlds in Calgary, Alberta CANADA. She skated well but still her performance in the long was a bit disappointing. I really thot she would get up on the podium with Slutskaya and the Olympic Gold medalist not competing. Instead it was Kimmie Meissner that had a great long program to get the Gold. Emily now could focus on her school and the coming year. She's matured and has a new program, new music, and it seems a new attitude where she's decided to make a go at skating and school. Rumor is that Harvard may be in her future. I wish her success and growth, as a skater, as a student, and as a person and a unique creation of God. [actually we all are...] May she grow in body, soul, mind, and SPIRIT and find her place in her life's destiny. Fall 2006 showed she has improved in many ways. She's more expressive and a strong athlete. Her programs with the exception of 'Proud Mary' are great. [I just don't care for that song...] I loved the performance and music of her Gloria Estefan medley as her exhibition program at Nationals...I felt that if that performance had been her long she might have challenged Cohen for Gold. (mu opinion) Emily's jumps and air splits were spectacular and it may be the best program she's ever skated. She was relaxed and everything fell in place. Emily was awesome. 3rd place at Cup of China portends good tidings for Emily and her recent Marshall skate was good too. A lot has come and gone for her and now it's gonna be a New Year. I think she'll burst to fame at Nationals. It's really only Kimmie and I think if Emily hits jumps, she may overpower Meissner. And I think Emily could skate strongly at World's in spite of all the great Japanese skaters. Wishes for Ms. Hughes: EMMIE...Emmie! I wish you all the best at this Holiday Season--a Happy Hannukah, a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous 2007. All of us your fans wish you success in skating but above all...HAPPINESS and JOY in your life. May G-d bless you. You are classy and thanks for that golden smile. Best wishes to you! My thots & prayers are with you. AC fanofgold |
