In various articles I have read it seems Emily and her people go out of their way to show that she is 'normal' and just like the other teens. Yet Emily is a top world class skater, has huge earning income potential, meets all kinds of people, travels the world over, has a rich and famous sister, is a National Merit Scholar, a top athlete-scholar, Ivy League candidate, and is active in charity work as well as her training...
Clearly Emily is NOT like the other average 'normal' kids. I understand her desire not to be above others or to seem superior but clearly Emily has to be something special.
Now if by normal she means she is like most of the little rats who drink, curse all the time, have no taste and culture or class, engage in immoral behavior, and are just lost [and sick] materialists, then that would be VERY BAD and SAD.

I remember the poem "If" by Kipling. I think it is great that you can be someone but not showoff or get prideful, yet not lower yourself to everyone elses's level. I think Emily can be a normal teen yet be someone very smart, very talented, very classy, and hopefully very spiritual. The lure of the Hollywood/5th Avenue propaganda scene is harmful and very seductive and one hopes she doesn't get sucked into that as so many have. From then on it is parties, and booze, and then a downhill skid. I have seen talented athletes locally go from great POTENTIAL down to the sewer in a few short years or months. Even female athletes.

We all wish EMILY good things instead!!! ....
Emily we are ur friends and we are here for you and will be there no matter what.

We can't really know enough about her to be able to tell, but I would venture a guess that she isn't a rat. The Emily we admire is the persona that is shown through the media. Whether or not this persona reflects how she is in reality can't be told by any one but those that are close to her.
I agree, she does seem to be something special. Very few people can combine athletic and academic prowess so fluidly. She's had opportunities throughout her life and seems to have taken full advantage of them. =)
Grr...National Merit...I think I missed the cutoff by about 1 or 2 points, which is basically a single question.. (-_-)

Celebrities do seem to be sucked into the whirlpool of success quite quickly these days. I would think that she would be a bit more preoccupied than Paris Hilton-esque characters, so perhaps she might have more resistance to it. Definitely has a ton of ambition. Then again, I would never have thought that Lindsay Lohan would go from The Parent Trap to what she is today. Only time can tell, I guess.

Whatever happens, we'll be behind her. :thumb:

I believe that her true personality isn't far off from what we see through the camera. A big point I look at to support this is her family. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9ky0s96ywY
It's obvious that she comes from a close knit family. They all act in a similar manner to Emily, and aside from some expected TV nervousness, they don't appear to be acting abnormal. Having a solid, happy home life is a huge deterrent for a child becoming lost in nasties like drugs, materialism, etc. I'm 19 and have seen for myself how these "rats" act and how frequently a turbulent family life appears lead down that path.

I think that "normal" in this case means the idealistic teen "normal", not the 'teen trying to be 21+ years old' normal. Basically it puts emphasis on interests like movies, music, High School, socializing, parties without any substance abuse, etc.

I have feeling that Emily doesn't fit into that rat persona. To be at the level at skating and to stay on top of her game as well as being a good student in school I don't think she would be able to maintain that if she did do all of that.

But Emily all in all is a normal person. Yes she has a talent in skating and is obviously amazing at that but she still is like every single one of us. And I don't think Emily would ever end up like Lindsay Lohan. Emily unlike has a strong support system and her and her family are all very close.

But like said above I will surely support her no matter what.

Bolter I totally agree w/ you as well as w/the others. I think that Emily is a humble person and while she enjoys the camera, she is also not wanting too too much attention. That is a fine balance to walk. I agree that Emily wants a [good] normal life like shopping, going to movies, music, etc.
Unfortunately there are so many people that are not always honest--or even never honest--some athletes like many pros in baseball, fb, etc. KNOW they have to say the 'right things' and so it is easy to gt numbed.
Emily should never be apologetic for being who she is. I really thank you guys for ur comments cause it confirms lots of things to me. It's always good to get the 'counsel' of others on everything....
Best wishes to all u 'guys'

Absolutely. A secure family provides a solid base for a child to grow. So far, the development of the children seem to imply such a situation.
I'm just thinking about how, in general, we never know what happens behind closed doors unless either we're behind the closed doors or things happen to "explode". Still, I don't expect any flying shrapnel to come from the Hughes family anytime soon, if ever. :thumb:
