Worked fine for me.
Something kinda interesting happened to me after watching this... (Things to know before I begin: I graduated in 2005, spent the next year in college studying animation which turned out not to be for me, then took most of the following year off to work and do some independent studying. This year I'm basically restarting as a freshman, like Emily, but at North Seattle Community college with a plan to transfer somewhere after 2 years.) So I watched this video, thought it was cool and interesting, and then about 5 minutes later my dad walked into the room and with a bit of a joking tone said something along the lines of "I need to you go to Harvard for me." I gave him an odd look because I could tell he wasn't being serious and then asked "...Why?" "Well," he responded "one of my friend's son is going to Notre Dame and I need you to show him up." ...Interesting coincidence... After that conversation I went back to reading my Psychology book and at the beginning of the section following the one I was nearly finished with, it started talking about Harvard graduates in some study. ... Still an interesting coincidence? Most of me wants to answer: Yes... but at the same time, I dunno ... just... wow. O.o |

I can't speak for Harvard, but I applied to Carnegie Mellon (well-known engineering school) and quite frankly, I found the atmosphere on campus kind of "snooty." I was accepted, which was a big deal, but simply didn't want to go there because of that. Went to Penn State instead, loved it. If you WANT to go to Harvard, and somehow get accepted, go for it. But don't go there just cause Emily is going there, or cause you feel pressured from someone. That wouldn't be right. |

Yeah, your right. I won't let any one person or event have that much effect on where I choose to transfer. I really just shared this because I found it interesting, not because it was going to have any major effect on my future. This off topic, but I noticed you mentioned engineering so can I ask if you did go into engineering which field did you study? And are you still enjoying it after graduation? (Engineering is an area I've been looking into, in particular Mechanical and Aero/Astro.) |

I'm glad you asked. Electrical Engineering. I enjoyed the theory classes a lot (freshman and sophomore years), but not the application later on. I highly recommend that you take the Myers-Briggs test to determine your strengths and likes/dislikes: http://www.myersbriggs.org/ I wish I had taken it before college. Right now I tutor math and physics. I don't work in Engineering because I hate it. I hate the writing, I hate experimentation, I don't really like building things or figuring out circuits. I'm glad I know the math behind it but otherwise it was really a mistake for me, I'd have been better off sticking to theory. The MBTI told me that, but by then it was too late. I just hope I can find an Engineering job I can tolerate, cause I need the money. I'm not too hopeful though. Maybe I painted kind of a negative picture there, cause of the mess my senior year was mostly, but I did love college overall. |

Awesome, thanks. That's a lot of good information. I just read about the Myers-Briggs test in my Psychology class a week or two ago and was interested in taking it. Finding a recommendation and a link here is perfect. It sounds like it's accurate, but on the other had I still have some hesitations in trusting any of these types of tests. A friend of mine is starting his senior year in Electrical Engineering next quarter (he's a quarter behind schedule) and he was telling me that medical school accepts applications from people with any kind of Bachelor's degree. My guess is that this isn't much help to you, but maybe there are more fields than medical that have the same policy that you'd be interested in. |
