I think he should switch places with Karla, if nothing more. He can at least be a decent backup healer in Light. Karla is totally useless, and she also requires you to train Bartre in order to even recruit her. Ick. Choosing to use her makes your team substantially worse even before she joins. TBQH, I almost always use Renault in Light. The main reason being that he has to be in every chapter after you get him in order to A Support. Still, I use him and if you don't kill the dragon in that first round, his Fortify works wonders.
