Neither 'Aran' nor Laura impress me.........at all. Reikken over at Fire Emblem Spritez has put forth a fairly persuasive argument concerning Laura being one of the worst units in part 1 despite her healer role, actually. As frail as the likes of Safy and her little Ioli sister are as priests, I can't quite see them ever drawn to as much enemy range danger for the duration of a more difficult game than FE10, or ever getting double attacked on top of one-shotted. :S
There are much better dedicated tanks for long term investment in Radiant Dawn than Aran/Brad like Haar, Tauroneo, Gatrie, Brom, etc. who get more options in weaponry (and I agree with mjemirzian's walkthrough that Nephenee/Danved are better sentinels in terms of balancing offense with defense), and likewise there is any number of characters who can use staves I'd rather field than Laura: all of these superior options from both camps will clearly (if they haven't already) hit third tier earlier anyways unless you go out of your way to favor Aran/Laura with BEXP, which I have zero interest in, but of course the soldier and priest nubs have to get points by default simply for being almost likely used for all the chapters where it's just the Dawn Brigade and Tauroneo/Nailah/Zelgius are absent - at least compared to useless garbage Leonardo, Fiona and Meg. Meh.
