The archers from FE4 are ridiculously awesome... Jamka or Brigid will pretty much blow any of the archers from the GBA FEs out of the water =P.
Crossbows are kind of a mixed bag. They are good, because they cap warrior's bow damage (so snipers can actually be better than them at archery, now...) and also give snipers a 1-2 range option. But, as you said, they are kind of broken whenever critical damage becomes involved, with a massive weapon might to multiply. Peggies are pretty much 1-shotted. I didn't even think about the potential with beastfoe/dragonslayer... scary possibilities.
