Hmm...I always thought the Laguz were all fairly strong. I just never used them because they always tended to switch back to human form at the most inopportune times possible. I also used Ulki as a dodge shield sometimes (at least when talking to Kilvas, though I can't recall using him any other time.)
My current playthrough, my main party consists of Ike, Oscar, Boyd, Mist, Rolf, Gatrie, Soren, Ilyana, Mia, Zihark, Jill, and when I have space, Reyson. I found this party rather stable in most conditions, barring the occasional critical from Killer weapons.
