Rennac's job is to pick locks (Colm can do all the stealing from enemies on his own), which pretty much all other units can do, and they actually do it better than Rennac, because they actually contribute something else that's positive to the team. What does Rennac contribe? Fail offense, like you said. Nice. Amelia is quite a bit better than Amelia.
