I'm agnostic, but was raised atheist. Religion has never been part of my life, and there was, I'll admit, a time when I was very intolerant of anyone who was religious. Time and experience have taught me otherwise, and now I'm more of the persuasion that everyone has an answer to their life. For some, that answer is religion, for me it isn't. Everyone's free to have their beliefs, and I'm not going to try to interfere with them or disrespect them.

Now I'm also of the belief that there is always a point where things go too far. People like Pat Robertson and Fred Phelps exemplify exactly that. (For the uninformed, the former hosts some televangelist news program and has said that Florida's hurricane problems have been due to them allowing a gay pride parade in Miami, and the latter is the "God hates fags/God hates Sweden" guy.) And I still have trouble disassociating the image of people like them from the 90%+ of America who aren't cowboy-hatted, gun-toting bigots. So yes, I do agree that those people are giving Christianity a bad reputation to the rest of the world.

Just from an outsider's point of view, doesn't the entire concept of "screaming "YOU'RE GOING TO HELL AND GOD HATES YOU UNTIL YOU REPENT" to the masses" contradict "love thy neighbor" and the concept of a heavenly Father? That's how I define "taking it too far", when one's "beliefs" involve degrading other people and telling them they're hated.
