Turtwig is sturdy, learns good moves early, and has the advantage over a lot of the gyms leadears in the game if I remember correctly. It takes a while for piplup to learn anything really good (and I mean a while) and chimchar is a bit fragile if I remember it right. If you need someone to know Surf or Icebeam, Starmie would be a greatchoice for that if you plan on playing online. Other than that the game isnt hard and you won't NEED Icebeam. You will need surf but other pokemon can make good use of that HM both on the battlefield and on the map. Turtwig if you want a sure thing. I picked it and I don't regret it at all.
