For the record, Texas can't secede. As should have been obvious from the fact that the last time they tried, we went to war with them. I thought the Tea Parties were a bit dumb. It's a cool motif idea, and it's great to see the vocal opposition. Just not something I'd do. But I agree with their message, and I find the media's representation of them, outside of Fox of course, atrocious. Must be that conservative bias B_K was always talking about.
To quote celebutard of the week, Janeane Garofalo:
And of course Olbermann didn't call her out on it.
Amen to both these comments.
You're misunderstanding the context of the Boston Tea Party. It was essentially just a massive demonstration(read: terrorist act) against unjust taxes. We only see it now as a step towards an armed revolution because we have the gift of hindsight, and the British reaction to the Tea Party turned most of Boston against the British. At the time of the Tea Party, most Americans still saw themselves as British subjects first. You're probably right though in saying that most of the protestors view it as a "second revolution", but probably just metaphorical. After all, the American Revolution was essentially the world's biggest tax revolt. I'd compare them to those idiots who go around wearing Che Guevara shirts. They are invoking the general revolutionary spirit, without giving a rat's ass about historical context. I don't presume to know whether or not McCain would get us out of this thing faster or slower than Obama. How about some reasons Obama will get us out faster? |
