So where's the positive to people being united? Group behavior suppresses individuality and limits freedom of intellectual expression outside of what's considered canon. The only way people can truly be open-minded, rational, individual people is outside of unity.
Unity erases ocnflict, and like Soja said, some can remain individuals despite being part of a group.
