Chapter 2 Father Time knelt before the shrine at the Temple on the outskirts of Fef. His face low to the ground so that his majestic beard splayed out gently on it. He lifted his grizzled head to the great statue of the FE Lords. He gazed upon each of their noble countenances, knowing deep in his heart that even their spirits would not be enough to quell the rising tides of the battle for the end. “So approaches the end” he sighed sadly, leaning back on his haunches, his flowing robes shifting slightly as he did. “The 7 guardians…the 7 seals…they are all gathering.” The aged seer slowly stood and turned to the door, speaking aloud to the shadows “as destiny as foretold…so shall it happen. The future is uncertain at best. Who will prevail? The guardians or the seals?” he strode out into the center of the courtyard. “The stars of destiny are aligning…my students…Reaver…you are gathering the 7 guardians to you…and Sentenal…you bring the 7 seals to your side. My poor children…friends while under my care now turned bitter enemies…destiny was indeed cruel to the both of you.” Father Time gently sat himself down by the small waterfall in the garden, watching his image shimmer and wave in the pool of water beneath him. “I see them too…the fire master, the earth master, the ice master, the shadow master, the forest master, the string master, and the bone master…the water master, the wind master, the lightning master, the light master, the iron master, the card master and the chi master…their powers are now fully awakened. They’ve felt both the surge of their own strength and the call of their leaders…the will of the heavens and the will of the earth…” he shook his grizzled head gently “…what twisted threads they all weave…the tapestry they create will be most beautiful, laced with sorrows and loss, traced with joys and loves…but the final outcome…the final outcome is still uncertain.” * * * She walked with an unerring grace about her. The air about her chilled as she passed. Her eyes stared dead ahead, quiet and always observing though never moving. Everyone in the quaint little bar turned to stare at the beautiful woman as she left. The room instantly warmed as she stepped out into the cool night air, brushing back her hair. “Who was that?” a man turned to ask his friend. “Heard her name is Crysta. No man who ever tried his luck with her ever came back the same.” Unbeknownst to the conversationalists, Crysta had heard. With a stifled giggle, she started the walk through the park so as to return home. Now that she was alone in the dimly lit park, she sighed a soft sigh of relief. All the frigidness left her as she strolled along almost half-merrily, a soft smile on her face. Suddenly she tensed again, all the former iciness returning in an instant. “Who’s there?” she called without a hint of uncertainty or confidence. From the shadows, several sunglass-suit clad men stepped out silently and watched her intently. “oh…just you paper spells again. Whoever keeps sending you must really want me dead.” With a flick of her hand, a long leather whip slashed out into the air, wrapping one of the men around the neck. She gave it a light tug and watched the man stumble forward. With a snap of her free hand, an icicle shot upwards through his face, dissolving him instantly while she deftly drew her whip back. “You heard the men at the bar, I’m sure. No man who ever tried his luck with me ever came back the same” She laughed light heartedly, sending her whip whizzing at the charging men. In a matter of moments, all that remained of her attackers were the pieces of paper they had been summoned from. “You’re very impressive” another woman stepped out from behind a tree. Her dark brown hair fell to her shoulders and her green eyes were surprisingly bright. “Those paper spells were nothing to you were they?” Crysta coiled her whip with a single flick and pointed it at the new woman. “was it you who sent them?” “I’m not gonna lie” the woman shrugged “I don’t know where they come from, and the seal on them is very strong. I can’t trace them.” “So you’re like me, aren’t you” Crysta lowered her weapon hesitantly “Yes…I’m one who’s involved with the end of the world” The woman opened her eyes and smiled. They were a warm blue “My name is Pendant. What is yours?” ”Crysta” ”Crysta, pleasure to meet you.” Pendant bowed slightly. As she did, a pair of circular blades appeared in each of her hands “However, I’m afraid this pleasure will be short lived” “You’re a seal.” Crysta said, as blankly as she could muster. “Yes. And you’re a guardian.” The conversation ceased as the two women stared at each other for what seemed an eternity. Almost without any sort of signal, Pendant sent both her chakram soaring towards Crysta, whirring angrily as they flew towards her opponent. Reacting quickly, Crysta jumped aside and flicked her whip, knocking one then the other off kilter and off course. Much to her surprise, they seemed to pick up their momentum and streak towards her again. “Wind Master” she cursed under her breath as she stomped her foot to the ground, sending a large icicle spike upwards, neatly deflecting the two whirring blades. Her respite was short lived as her senses kicked up. She jumped upwards, executing a neat flip as a wind blade streaked just underneath her. Landing gently atop the ice pillar, she snapped her fingers, ice crystals exploding in many jagged spikes in full radius behind Pendant. Pendant threw herself aside, grabbing her returning chakram in the process. After her roll, she crouched there, staring at her opponent. “I expected no less of a guardian.” She retorted. “I expected more from a seal” a sneer in reply. “Funny! You’re all about the caustic retorts aren’t you?” Pendant started to run forwards, flinging her chakram out to each side. They curved heavily and whirred in dangerously towards Crysta’s neck. Consequently, Pendant slashed her arms in an X motion, causing two equally dangerous wind blades to fly out at the pillar Crysta was standing on. “Shut up” The Ice Mistress leapt up as her little tower crumbled. With one deft flick her whip wrapped around one of the whirring chakram and swung it around into the other one, knocking them off course again. Knowing, this time, what they were capable of, she thrust out her hand, small icicles shooting forth from her hand, fast enough to pierce Pendant’s skin, and small enough not to be immediately seen. Pendant reeled back from the first little wave that pricked her, drawing blood in various places on her torso. In defense she crossed her arms over her chest, causing a small vortex to rise up around her, neatly deflecting the little blades. “Enjoying yourself, Miss Pendant?” “Very much so” the wind mistress sneered in reply. “But I’m afraid this battle must conclude” a new voice. Suddenly a gust of water rushed out from the woods at Crysta’s back. Without so much turning to look at it she froze it in its place. “Figured you would to that” The voice was monotone, and had almost a dead feel to it…but it belonged to a young girl. She slid over the top spinning a pair of tonfa before releasing a strike at Crysta’s head. With the slightest tilt of her head, Crysta let the tonfa and the girl slide by over to where Pendant stood heaving. “Another Seal.” “Correct. I’m Dragon_Sniper, the water master of the seven seals.” The girl had short blue hair and very calm blue eyes to match. She was dressed in typical schoolgirl outfit, only she was armed with tonfa. She turned slowly to Pendant “Miss Pendant…we are required back at headquarters immediately. This battle can resume at a later date.” Pendant nodded and summoned her chakram to her. With a little flourish of her hand, the two disappeared in a sudden spiral of wind. As soon as they were gone, Crysta broke into a smile and a laugh “well that was fun” she picked up a few of her things that she’d dropped and continued on her way home. |
