Yeah, but Byzantine deteorated insanely fast. It went from Greece all the down to Cyrene, to the cities of Thessaloniki, Sparta, and Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul. Though Romans, through blood, I still dont consider Byzantine to be considered true Romans, since they spoke Greek, fought with Greek Tactics, and further more, were based in Greece. ;_; Their quick deteoriation takes off some points, from me. Though, I do agree, their method of ruling was superior to that of the Western Roman Empire. |

You do know that Sparta defeated and conquered Athens, right? In the Pelopenian Wars. No Democracy in history has survived more than 1000 years, and I don't think I can think of one that got close to that. Empires and Kingdoms last much longer. The US is a Republic, not a Democracy. The US hasn't even been around for 300 years yet, so its still young. |

Yes, Sparta did defeat Athens, but, which state was more developed? Athens. Which state shown more resistance to the Romans? Athens. Which city conducted the defense against the Persian invasion of the Bronze Age? Athens. Yes, Sparta's military was insane, but, even to the days when the Romans invaded Greece, they were still using the phalanx, quite possibly one of the most useless formations in that era. I do agree with Sentinal's stand on Democracies. Honestly, how often was Greece conquered? Possibly, twice every century. The US is more of a Republic then a Democracy, due to the fact we have different houses, like Congress and Senate. A pure democracy is straight up voting for a leader, and nothing else. |

Sparta was war-like, but they weren't very war-smart. Read The Art of War by Sun Tzu And a pure democracy is everyone voting on every bill, law, admendment, and anything else that needs approval. That would get too hectic, so we put a republic into it, which makes it so that leaders we vote on do for us. We are lazy bums. |

I dont see the phalanx as being useless. It would easily one of the best formations against calvery, and it was similar to the "turtle" formation of the Romans. No, granted, the Romans weren't big on calvery, but Greece was exausted and declining by the time the Romans invaded due to the internal wars. And the Wars against the Persians was managed by Athens mainly, but the Spartans did save them all at the Battle of Thermopylae, with 300 Spartans standing agianst the whole Persian Army. All the city states banded together in those wars. And unfortunatly, I'm not too familiar with Rome's conquest of Greece, so i'll take your word for it there. |
